Slash: You have to prove yourself when you play the cities that are real hip to what`s going on.
Slash: I saw somebody who had my name tattooed into her ankle and she said that she had done it at home the night before adn then displayed it proudly at the gig.
Slash: No, basically our life is on the road, where you get up every morning, pack, go to the gig, then afterwards drive to the next city and just drink in between.

 Fanzines
Fanzines are not funded or subsidized by commercial or public entities; publishers, editors and contributors receive no financial compensation, and fanzines are traditionally circulated for at most a nominal cost to defray postage or production expenses, in exchange for similar publications or contributions for publication, or free of charge to any interested parties.
Early fanzines were hand-drafted or typed on a manual typewriter and printed using primitive reproduction techniques (e.g., the spirit duplicator or even the hectograph).
The Punk explosion in the United Kingdom led to a massive upsurge of interest in fanzines as an alternative to the mainstream media that was felt to be too exploitative, capitalist, and essentially uninterested in the Punk Movement and the concerns of disaffected youth.

Contrast this to the terms slash and Mary Sue which had first appeared on the Internet by 1993 for slash with the Virgule mailing list and 1985 for Mary Sue in the comics fandom on Usenet.
It took roughly 12 years for Mary Sue to be used on-line, 8 years for slash to be used on-line, 11 years for smarm to be first used and 15 years for smarm to really gain traction as a term used regularly in fandom.
Compare that to slash which originally was defined purely in a Star Trek sense and only involving male characters who were canonically heterosexual which has undergone linguistic changes and morphing to include het fan fiction, not being characterized by the heterosexual nature of the characters, including female/female pairings.

 Flipside Fanzine Website Homepage
Flipside Fanzine (which long outlived Slash Magazine) and some could argue "punk rock" (in terms of its original intent), was long the vanguard of the punk fanzines and would eventually go on to obtain worldwide status and recognition as such.
The fanzine, begun by a group of mostly Whittier (California) High School graduates, chronicled the early Los Angeles punk rock music scene, beginning with the first issue back in August of 1977 up until approx.
Over that time period, the Fanzine evolved from a disorganized stapled-together 1/4 page Xerox fanzine, to a major glossy-covered "magazine" with many issues over 150 pages in size and one of the main voices of the punk music scene.

A Womb With A View: Women in SF
Among the multitudes of Trek fanzines arose one specific form: the "slash" fanzine, initially defined by the slash (or "/") between the names of Kirk and Spock in "Kirk/Spock" (or "K/S") stories.
The women who produce and consume this "slash" fiction remain members of a subculture of SF (they can be found on the Internet) but often tend to keep to themselves on the margins of the wider SF community.
Many slash participants might be considered to be SF fans (or consider themselves as such) only because their interests happen to overlap into some specific areas of SF (specific TV shows, etc.)

For example, he asked a group of male MIT students and a group of female fanzine writers to tell what came into their minds when he named each character.
For the technologically-inclined males, what seemed most salient were the capabilities of the characters as autonomous problem solvers, stressing instances where one or another, primarily acting alone, saved the ship from certain destruction.
For the female fanzine writers, characters could not be discussed alone but were understood within a web of character relationships, stressing the centrality of their emotional lives, desires, and motivations to the experience of the series.
