History of Slashdot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "Slashdot" was chosen for the resulting unusual URL, "http://slashdot.org" (or when read aloud, "Aitch tee tee pee colon slash slash slash dot dot org").
March 6 - Slashdot subscribers are given the ability[19] to see articles 10-20 minutes before they are released to the general public.
May - Slashdot bans HTTP proxies running on ports 3128, 80, 8000 and 8080 from posting and institutes a system of semipermanent posting bans on the subnets of users who are negatively moderated several times.

Slashdot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slashdot is notable in that its commenting system is much more robust than most blogs, with threading and user moderation having been introduced before these were commonplace in modern weblog packages.
While Slashdot's core audience is often said to consist of Linux enthusiasts and various other enthusiasts of the open source software movement, there is a significant Windows audience as well.
Historically, sites that received a mention on Slashdot were said to be "Slashdotted" as they would receive a flood of attention that may overwhelm their servers.

Slashdot - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Stuff that matters." Slashdot is often criticized for posting story summaries that are typographically incorrect, factually inaccurate, biased, or defamatory (stories often incite flamewars), while ignoring news or commentary on issues which outsiders may consider more serious or important (see Slashdot subculture).
It is also infamous for the Slashdot effect, when thousands of Slashdot readers read an article and connect to the linked website, flooding it with unexpected traffic and at times bringing the site down in a manner similar to a Denial of Service attack.
The software that runs Slashdot is called Slash or slashcode and is released under the terms of the Free Software Foundation's GNU General Public License.

 Slashdot - Uncyclopedia
Slashdot's primary export is journalistic integrity, and Slashdot has grown almost as rich as Oscar Wilde due to skyrocketing prices because of the global shortage, as well as the Federation of Planets and Third World Nations adopting integrity as its staple food.
Slashdot's primary import is n00bz, which upon arrival into the country are sent to meat factories to be processed into spam, an all-purpose household paste, good for use as a duct tape, glue, glue solvent, dodgeball, koala, roofing material or low-end computer.
Slashdot has attracted many critics in recent years, who say it has wooden acting, no real emotion, an incoherent and inconsistent plot that is full of holes (indeed, the Plot Hole at Loathing is one of the Fifteen Wonders of the World), and poor directing all around.

 Digg Vs Slashdot
Slashdot has close to a million registered users and it is currently owned by Open Source Technology Group.
Slashdot users are called slashdotters and the popular slashdot effect has taken down many servers due to its high traffic volume when many users try to access the same website concurrently.
Slashdot would have tons of articles being posted everyday and many of them would be duplicates with different wordings.

 The Slashdot Effect
Slashdot has been one of the largest computer news related websites in the world for some time now.
With this in mind, being 'slashdotted' is doubtless a hope and prayer of all webmasters.
Slashdot had better watch themselves, with the rate of growth in our industry, they may someday fear being "HardOCP'd", or even "2CPU'd".

J’raxis·Com • The History of the World According to Slashdot
Following his disappearance from Slashdot in 632, a succession dispute results in the emergence of two troll factions: the Pythonni and the Perliites.
Slashdot runs the infamous headline “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.” Shamefaced, the site quickly retracts the story when numerous readers point out that it is not news for nerds, stuff that matters.

J’raxis·Com • J’raxis Confesses to Being the WIPO Troll
The WIPO Troll first made his appearance at Slashdot in October or November, 2000.
WIPO concentrated all his crapflooding and trolling to Slashdot exclusively, writing several memorable crapfloods, most notably, the Taco-Snotting FAQ (a term which itself seems to have entered the troll lexicon alongside “First Post” and Natalie Portman jokes).
This was originally posted to J’raxis’ journal at Slashdot and simultaneously posted to J’raxis·Com, and a diary entry was posted by J’raxis at Kuro5hin, pointing here.

Slashdot | The Early History of Nupedia and Wikipedia, Part II
Consulting the website logs, we noted a Google effect: each time Google spidered the website, more pages would be indexed; the greater the number of pages indexed, the more people arrived at the project; the more people involved in the project, the more pages there were to index.
Moreover--and this is something that you might not be able to understand very well if you haven't actually experienced it--there is a fair bit of (mostly friendly) peer pressure, and community standards are constantly being reinforced.
It would also make him relevant because what he wrote in slashdot is for me nothing but a blast from the past.

VE3D Boards - Greatest Easter Eggs in Gaming History
Gamespot is running an amusing piece called The Greatest Easter Eggs in Gaming History which takes a look at where Easter eggs came from (besides the Easter Bunny, cough) and examines some of the better ones found in games throughout history.
This egg is particularly important because it was a classic example of designer-fueled celebrity...as it might not have been as interesting if John Romero weren't a widely recognized character.
Another fun one is Dopefish, which could be the subject of a multi-page article in itself.
