The purpletuft favours exposed snags at the forest edge, usually not far from fruiting trees, but this aberrant cotinga is easily overlooked because of its diminutive size.
The enchanting song of the bristlefront is one of the most evocative sounds of the Atlantic Forests.
This strange tapaculo is an expert at hiding itself, but with a bit of luck we should be able to admire its lovely frontal tuft and long tail.

 Brazil - March 2005
At an antswarm, we got a too poor view of a brown tinamou scrambling up a shrubby bank at our arrival, but better views of white-collared foliage-gleaner.
Back near the lodgings, a sharp-tailed streamcreeper watched us as we watched a slaty bristlefront, stopping every so often to sing, sneak in and out of cracks between large boulders by a forested stream.
We saw another slaty bristlefront; Edson told us these coastal birds will be split from the bird seen at Intervales.

We spent over four hours at FA and it was some of the best birding I have experienced.
The hummingbird feeders were filled by the time we reached FC in the late morning creating a spectacle as hummingbirds of eight species jockeyed for position on the two feeders.
We did see Reddish Hermit, Rufous-breasted Leaftosser, Lesser Woodcreeper, Slaty Bristlefront, a female Pin-tailed Manakin, and Red-crowned Ant-Tanager along with many other species we had found at the Fazendas.

Our days will be spent birding the entrance road and an excellent trail system that winds through elevations ranging from 2700 and 5200 feet.
From the cacophony of parrots screeching overhead at dawn to the musical song of Slaty Bristlefront, the forest birds will hold our interest throughout our stay.
Our efforts should be rewarded with sightings of large and small, from Dusky-legged Guans to numerous hummingbirds including Frilled Coquette, Violet-capped Woodnymph, the striking Brazilian Ruby and Swallow-tailed Hummingbird.

 Toucan Tours - Brazil 2002
Once the sky had cleared a little we made for Buff-throated Purpletuft and with this tiny cotinga safely under the belt and more rain on the way we made for the local 'Churascaria' for an early lunch.
The afternoon session found us fighting off the rain once again but this did not stop us seeing Slaty Bristlefront, Unicolored Antwren and White-eyed Foliage-Gleaner.
During the rest of our stay at Ubatuba the weather took pity on us allowing us to see a superb male Squamate Antbird, Pale-browed Foliage-Gleaner, Eye-ringed Tody-Tyrant, Spot-backed Antshrike, Salvadori's Antwren, Azure-shouldered Tanager, Red-necked Tanager and Streamer-tailed Tyrant.

Another White-necked Hawk and an angry-looking Least Pygmy Owl were much appreciated, whilst the antbird guild was represented by a rare Plumbeous Antvireo, some Band-tailed Antwrens in a mixed-species flock and a lovely male Scalloped Antbird hiding in the understorey.
A bout of scanning along a forest edge yielded Rufous-thighed Kite, a pair of dazzling Blue-winged Macaws, some tail-pumping Sooretama Slaty Antshrikes, a displaying White-bearded Manakin and some great scope studies of both male and female White-winged Cotinga.
The afternoon was spent in a derelict cocoa plantation and its nearby forest edge, where Whistling Heron, Sooty Swift, a recently-fledged young Buff-throated Purpletuft, Sao Paulo Tyrannulet and Neotropical River Warbler were noted.

 FAVORITES FROM BRAZIL
This trail also produced excellent views of the diminutive Drab-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant.
Our last morning on this trail, just before turning around, a Slaty Bristlefront let out a brief call on the nearby hillside.
With a little coaxing the bird quietly made its way down to the trail’s edge — eye level for us.

 Brasil 2002
Edson tape-lured a Slaty Bristlefront (our first tapaculo) to within feet of the trail, White-bearded, Pin-tailed and Blue Manakins were displaying by the track, White-throated Woodcreeper emerged briefly, and Julia got onto a single Neotropical River Warbler.
A Natterer’s Slaty Antshrike (another recent split) competed for attention with Swallow-tailed Kites over the canopy, and it was a real bonus to locate at least two Blackish Nightjars in daylight, sat motionless on the dark granite rock.
The temperature began to climb, and we sat still, surveying the forest below, the distant trees (with a certain 50m tower poking out of them), and the all too close tracts of cleared land beyond.

I checked the clearing for Fork-tailed Tody-tyrant Hemitriccus furcatus, but to no avail.
There were other good birds, though, like Sombre Hummingbird Aphantochroa cirrochloris, Rufous-capped Antthrush Formicarius colma, Slaty Bristlefront Merulaxis ater, Long-tailed Tyrant Colonia colonus, White-winged Becard Pachyramphus polychopterus, White-bearded Manakin Manacus manacus, Brazilian Tanager Ramphocelus bresilius and Flame-crested Tanager Tachyphonus cristatus.
Later we drove to Parati, a nice little 16th century town.
