Defenses beginning with 1...c6 and 1...e6, often followed by the center thrust 2...d5, are also popular.
Defenses with an early...d6 coupled with a king-side fianchetto are also commonly played.
The Philidor Defense is not popular in modern chess because it allows White an easy space advantage while Black remains solid but cramped and passive.

Slav Defense - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Slav is one of the primary defenses to the Queen's Gambit.
The Semi-Slav Defense, a kind of a combination Orthodox Defense and Slav Defense, is a very complex opening in its own right.
Traditionally Black had a choice between 4...e6 and 4...dxc4 before developing the queen bishop, but in the 1990s 4...a6 was introduced, with the idea of developing the queenside without locking in the queen bishop or conceding the center.

The Slav, characterized by the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 is a flexible defense that has been played by 11 of the first 13 World Champions.
There are a variety of ways to get to various Slav set-ups, and this chapter explains why white or fl may play a particular move order – what they could be aiming to achieve and/or avoid.

By declining the temporary pawn sacrifice by means of 2...e6, Black erects a solid position, the pawns on d5 and e6 give Black a foothold in the center.
If Black now plays 3...c6, the game is the Semi-Slav Defense, which bears resemblance to both the Slav Defense and the other lines of the Queen's Gambit Declined.

Although Indian defenses were championed in the 1920s by players in the hypermodern school, they were not fully accepted until Soviet players showed in the late 1940s that these systems are sound for Black.
The Modern Benoni Defense is a risky attempt by Black to to unbalance the position and gain active piece play at the cost of allowing White a pawn wedge at d5 and a central majority.
The Queen's Knight Defense is an uncommon opening that often transposes to the Nimzowitsch Defense after 1.d4 Nc6 2.e4 or the Chigorin Defense after 2.c4 d5, although it can lead to unique lines, for example after 1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 or 2.c4 e5.

The system is not forcing and does not put the opposing player under a great amount of pressure, but has a deceptive sting that will surprise many opponents.
Essentially, it is a Semi-Slav defense "reversed", and the extra tempo gives White attacking possibilities not usually seen from the fl side.
However, if white doesn't win in the opening or middle game, he often will have a pawn majority of 3-2 on the Q side which can be a winning ending.

The Slav (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6) is a close relative of the Caro-Kann (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5); although the central pawn structure differs for White, Black's is identical and many of the same principles apply between the two openings.
This is what interested me in the Slav; as a Caro-Kann player, the Slav was recommended to me by several strong players who assert that the task of learning the Slav would be easier due to my familiarity with the Caro-Kann (giving me a "leg up" as it were).

The French Defense has a proven reputation for adaptibility and soundness, and is attractive to the Black player who seeks a complex strategic fight in unbalanced positions, with healthy counterplay and many chances to decide sharp battles in his favor!

 Kasparov crushes Deep Junior
Deep Junior, which calculates 3 million moves per second and won the computer version of the world championship last year, selected the Slav Defense in reply to Kasparov's first move, his queen's pawn advancing two squares.
The Slav Defense can produce exciting tactical skirmishes in the middlegame where action can break out in the center or the flanks, but Kasparov controlled the game.
On the 17th move, Deep Junior gave up a more valuable rook in exchange for a knight and the Russian grandmaster seized the advantage, mobilizing his pieces to control the crucial central files of the board and bringing his king to safety in a corner.

Critically, the 28-year-old Anand failed to castle his king to safety, and Karpov, 46, succeeded in winning a third pawn as he developed an irresistible attack.
Despite an accurate defense in which Anand often found the only viable move, Karpov's attack culminated in a speculative queen sacrifice which left him the better endgame.

The Campbell Report - "Hard Chess" Columns
In the main lines of the Queen's Gambit Declined or the Slav, one or even two flaccid moves by White often leave Black still wondering where his counterplay is.
White's move looks unambitious, but it is a sophisticated attempt to sidestep the Slav, forcing play instead into the main lines of the Meran.
This comes close to being an adequate defense to the Queen's Gambit, and it should hardly be dismissed merely because it saddles Black with an IQP.
