  America's Sleep Deficit
Anyone who sleeps "too much," or who is not up and about by some arbitrarily defined time in the morning, is considered to be morally suspect--a practitioner of sloth, one of the seven deadly sins.
Sleep deprivation and irregular sleep patterns are implicated in heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, overeating, drug and alcohol abuse, and depression.
Ironically, at a time when their bodies need more sleep, teens are delighting in their newly-won freedom to stay up later, as well as in the increased number of interesting things they can do with those extra hours of waking time.

INABIS '98 - Sleep Deficit, Fatal Accidents, and the Spring Shift to Daylight Savings Time
Injuries in the work place due to sleep debt resulted in the loss of 29,250,000 work days, with 13,650,000 days lost directly due to the accident itself, while 15,600,000 days were lost due to complications and long term effects of the accident within the first year.
If sleep deficit is the cause, then the effects of sleep loss should increase as the day wears on, becoming more obvious later in the day.
If the sleep loss hypothesis is correct, then why isn't there a reduction in the number of traffic accidents in the fall, when the shift back to standard time provides an extra hour for sleep.

 AHMF: References for sleep
Sleep continuity complaints preceded fatigue in only 20% of CFS patients, but there was a strong association between relapse and sleep disturbance.
Although sleep abnormalities may play a role in the etiology of CFS, they seem to be unlikely to be an important cause of daytime fatigue in the majority of patients.
One of the most surprising effects was the dramatic improvement of sleep disturbances that occurred in most patients on this medication: more than 60% of the patients who finished the study reported over 70% improvement in sleep deficit.

This type of sleep pattern may be associated with polyphasic sleep; however, it is more often used to supplement normal sleep, especially when the sleeper has accumulated a sleep deficit.
For example, someone who doesn't get enough sleep at night and is drowsy at work may sleep during his or her lunch break.

Adults with children and those not happy with their marriages are particularly susceptible to sleep disorders, the survey showed.

Their study with Swedish males between the ages of 19 and 30 subjected to 64 hours of sleep loss revealed that resistance to performance decrement was highly related to adrenaline levels as well as to the range of adrenaline.
Moreover, length of sleep was not predicted well by factors such as stress at work, noisiness of sleeping room, drinking coffee, and smoking cigarettes, although these and similar predictors were strongly related to quality of sleep.
The article indicates that sleep architecture was first documented in the 1950s with the discovery of REM (rapid eye movement), or dream sleep, making modern sleep physiology a relatively new field of science.

The Causes and Treatments of ADD-ADHD. A Multi-disciplinary approach to Attention Deficits, Attention Deficit Disorder, ...
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (add-adhd, ADHD, AD/HD) is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both children and adults.
Even though it is generally assumed that people diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD evidence a common set of characteristics emanating from a common etiology, little agreement is found among researchers regarding these symptoms.
The difference is that medication, special education, and counseling can mask these symptoms and behaviors, while vision therapy, occupational therapy and/or treatment of allergies may alleviate the underlying causes and thus eliminate the symptoms long-term.

INABIS '98 - Sleep Deficit, Fatal Accidents, and the Spring Shift to Daylight Savings Time
Some researchers claim that society is chronically sleep deprived, and even small additional reductions in sleep time may have consequences for safety.
Alternative explanations, not involving sleep are that after the spring shift people must drive to work in dimmer light or that those who forget the time shift find themselves late for work and driving with reckless haste.
Thus these data are consistent with the hypothesis that a small decrease in sleep duration, such as that which occurs with the spring shift to DST, can significantly increase accident susceptibility.

A sleep deficit results when someone’s activities of daily living - including watching late night tv - frequently interfere with getting  a sufficient night’s sleep.  Insomnia, on the other hand, includes difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and difficulty with waking up too early.
Do these conditions require medical therapy?  Not always, but if they are causing undesirable consequences, they deserve a medical evaluation.  Yet only one in 20 women with trouble sleeping seek medical attention and fewer than half of family physicians routinely ask about trouble sleeping in an annual checkup.
Many patients treat themselves for sleep problems with scheduled napping, a great solution for those who can’t get sufficient sleep at night.  Falling asleep at your desk, however, doesn’t count.  Daytime napping itself, however, can interfere with nighttime sleep.
