Sleeper (1973) - IMDb user comments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
All in all, `Sleeper' was a very funny farce on science fiction stories, and it cemented Allen's ability to be an engaging and funny in his films.
The humour of "Sleeper" is often directed against figures from the sixties and seventies- perhaps too much so, as this type of humour tends to date very quickly.
Never a film to be taken seriously, it has all the elements of a cult film, with the exception being that because it's a Woody Allen film, it's been pushed more into the mainstream.

A film might also gain sleeper status through critical or industry recognition, as was the case with Babe, an unassuming children's movie that surprisingly garnered seven Academy Award nominations.
Since they aren't expected to do tremendously well, sleeper films often lack the sort of pre-release advertising given to the big budget films that are expected to become blockbusters.

It is a consistently funny film with sharp political barbs espousing the philosophy that Allen has maintained to this day, but it is much funnier than a lot of his more recent efforts and is free of those later films' pretensions.
The film becomes a comedy of errors, as Miles tries to fit into a society that is exactly the same as his old one except with more futuristic devises (except for a trusty VW bug).
Sleeper is quite dated, as all science fiction films do, but this does have some homosexual and Jewish gags that might not be included today even though they aren't particularly politically incorrect.

Sleeper is definately one of Woody Allan's greatest films, it is just ridiculous from start to finish, each scene holding something completely new and unexpected, but equally enjoyable.
There are echoes of 'Sleeper' in a myriad of films even today (The Matrix for example), and the 'deeper' issues raised by the film are as relevant today as they were back in '73.
Sleeper is particularly heavy on visual, slapstick comedy, alot of which is brilliantly funny, not least because Allen himself looks like a total space-cadet.

 Sleeper (1973)
Sleeper (1973) is Woody Allen's science-fiction satirical comedy classic and screwball comedy about the future - with Dixieland and swing music.
Filled with one-liners, Allen's film both satirizes the 1970's and parodies sci-fi books and past classics, such as Buck Rogers "Serial" (1939), Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971), George Lucas' THX 1138 (1971), George Orwell's futuristic novel 1984, and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
One sly cameo is that of Douglas Rain as an evil computer near the end of the film, gently spoofing his role as HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Mike Myers' Austin Powers series owes a debt to this film.
