 Giorgione's Sleeping Venus--A Beautiful Enigma
Giorgione da Castelfranco painted this work, the Sleeping (Dresden) Venus in 1509, a work of Renaissance Venice.
The Sleeping Venus is my area of focus in my doctoral studies at UCSB, under the direction of Dr. Robert Williams and Dr. Carole Paul.

 Giorgione - The Sleeping Venus
The Sleeping Venus of Giorgione is one of the great works whose power must be traced to its perfect inner harmony, rather than to any particular distinctive feature.
It represents a moment of balance and merging between several different tendencies, all of which are isolated, carried to extremes, and made to clash irreconcilably, iii other works of art.
Though Titian is thought to have completed the landscape, there is little of his more masculine, rugged vigor in it, or of his tendency to elaboration; less even than in the Paris Concert Champetre.

In the sixteenth-century record of Marcantonio Michiel's Anonimo Moreelliano, sixteen works by Giorgione are listed, of which four are identified and traditionally accepted-The Virgin of Castelfranco (c.1504, Castelfranco), the so-called Three Philosophers (c.1505, Vienna), the Giovanelli landscape, called Tempest (c.1505, Venice Academy), and the Sleeping Venus (c.1510, Dresden) probably finished by Titian.

The Sleeping Venus (1510?, Gemaldegalerie, Dresden, Germany), attributed to Giorgione, pictures a reclining nude and is one of the first modern works of art in which the female figure is the principal and only subject of the picture.
Giorgione's innovations in subject matter were especially important in two areas: the landscape and the female nude.
Prior to Giorgione, landscape scenes were taken from biblical, classical, or allegorical stories, but the Tempest appears to have no such source and stands on its own as a purely imaginative work.

His reputation for establishing the High Renaissance style in Venice, despite the parsity of work extant, is suggested by the quality of pieces such as Sleeping Venus and the impact of his followers, in particular Titian.
Much of what we know about Giorgio da Castelfranco (Giorgione) has come to us from Vasari; beyond this few contemporary records have survived and those tend to relate to his work rather than the man (such as the documents recording the 1508 fresco facade of the Fondaco de' Tedeschi).
Peter Humfrey records a total catalogue of 10 to 15 works by Giorgione with another equal or larger group of works that are difficult to authenticate due to lack of provenance and chronological difficulties.

Apart from the Sleeping Venus, only four other pictures are generally accepted as unquestionably his: the Castelfranco Altarpiece (sometimes known as the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Two Saints), in the cathedral of Castelfranco; The Three Philosophers, the Portrait of a Lady (both Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna); and The Tempest (or Storm) (Accademia, Venice).
But otherwise Giorgione may be regarded as an innovator in the development of the oil technique, in rich and warm colour and in a type of painting independent of a particular position or function.
The painting by Giorgione known as The Tempest is one of the most critically discussed pictures of all time.

 The Venus of Urbino by TIZIANO Vecellio
If the pose of this Venus brings to mind that of Giorgione's Sleeping Venus in Dresden (which the young Titian had completed after Giorgione's death) the intent of the painting is quite different.
Titian's Venus has nothing to do with Giorgione's idealised image of female beauty, it is normally interpreted as an allegory of marital love.
The Venus of Urbino was painted for Guidobaldo della Rovere, the heir of Francesco Maria della Rovere, Duke of Urbino.

 The New York Review of Books: Solving the Correggio Problem
With brilliant invective, Morelli ridiculed the blind reverence museum visitors showed in front of this painting—the very same visitors who were unmoved by Giorgione's great Sleeping Venus, then hanging in the same museum and labeled as a copy of a Titian, painted by Sassoferrato.
This double coup by Morelli, the discovery of the Giorgione and the killing of the Correggio, was the most spectacular demonstration of his method.
In 1880 Giovanni Morelli, the founder of modern connoisseurship, who aimed to establish the attribution of works of art on a more systematic or "scientific" basis, made a sensation in the art world by announcing that Correggio's Reclining Magdalen was a mere pastiche by a late seventeenth-century Dutch painter.
