		Sleepless in Sudan is just another website on just another violent conflict in Africa – but uncensored, direct and without the sugar-coating that the tightly controlled and highly politicized environment demands from the official sources.
		An excellent article on IRIN gives a flavour of Darfur's current lawlessness (and the increased level of disgust that aid agency officials are publicly expressing about it): fresh clashes, attacks on towns and villages, destruction of desperately needed crops and wells, aid workers with guns pointed in their faces.
		It's the 21st of November, and this means that the 7th (and "final") round of the Darfur peace talks is supposed to start today (well, media reports can't seem to make up their mind as to whether or not they've been postponed, but last we heard they are back on).

		Set in Turin, "Sleepless" is the twisted tale of an ex-detective (Max von Sydow) who's called out of retirement to investigate a series of murders patterned after a similar spate of killings that ended in 1983 when the primary suspect - a dwarf who wrote crime novels - apparently committed suicide.
		Eminently repeatable, "Sleepless" isn't merely one of the director's most accomplished films for ages, it's also one of the best horror movies of the last twenty years.

		Sleepless lacks the savant-level spark of invention that elevates Argento's best films (Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebre) and the flashes of brilliance that indicate his second-tier of work (Phenomena, Opera, Inferno).
		Called out of retirement to investigate what appears to be the resumption of an old unsolved serial murder case, Commissario Ulisse Moretti (von Sydow), stricken by insomnia, discovers the key to the murders in a child's nursery rhyme.
		Sleepless is, at its heart, a redux of Deep Red, complete with childhood flashbacks, an evil puppet, and a haunting children's tune.

		Sleepless largely lacks this contrast, and suffers for it.
		I've seen a lot of grumbling about the Artisan DVD version of "Sleepless." Since I haven't seen the European release that is supposedly much better than the American version, I will say that I thought this DVD wasn't as bad as some think.

		I am using SleepLess to keep my powebook from sleeping when I close the lid because I keep a VPN running while I'm wireless and it's a pain to have to reconnect as I run around the office to meetings with my laptop after it goes to sleep every time I close the lid.
		The only problem I experienced is that the version of insomnia that came with the SleepLess package (/Applications/SleepLess.app/Contents/Resources/insomnia.kext) wouldn't load for me. I had a copy of the kext file I had previously downloaded from the insomnia site and replaced the one included with the package and everything works great now.
