A collaborative project with the Queensland University of Technology, on population genetics of sleepy cod, found the southern strain of sleepy cod from the Fitzroy River to be significantly different to the northern strain.
Southern strain sleepy cod appear to be faster growing than the northern strain, and high density culture in cages of tanks appears to improve growth rates and evenness of growth.

Since the inaugural meeting of Faust Dam Fish Stocking Association Inc. on the 1st May 1990 the committee members have establishing a fishery which was described by Modern Fishing magazines Rod Harrison who first fished the Dam during December 1998, as the best fishing he had ever experienced in an impoundment.
The stocking group with assistance of D.P.I. have stocked Barramundi, Sooty Grunter, Sleepy Cod and a few Saratoga.
Sleepy Cod are showing up in good numbers with electrode fishing surveys, but only a few are being caught by line.

We were able to bank a couple reasonable Black Bream and Sleepy Cod on the dead bait, whilst the shrimp imitation fly was raising and snaring juvenile Jungle Perch and Black Bream in the stream leading to the hole.
This definitely raised our spirits as we travelled the next morning to our next campsite some 25km further home as the ‘Shag’ flies as we call it in the far north, (the Shag is a fl bird which is a family member of the Cormorant).
It is worth mentioning at this stage that Black Bream we caught are a supreme, succulent fish and the Sleepy Cod were not far behind.
