 Estes "The Legend Of"
John Estes is not a forgotten man of the past - not a name on vintage record labels, but a flesh-and-blood reality still able to sing as well as ever, still writing blues poetry, and playing better guitar than in former years.
A full biography of Sleepy John Estes cannot be presented here but his own lyric "I was born in Lowry County--Schooled in Winfield Lane" tells part of the story.
Sleepy John Estes sings with a depth of feeling and emotional thrust that can only be described, as Big Bill did, as "crying the blues." While singing, John recalls the personal experiences that are mirrored in his lyrics, which are usually of his own composition.

Sleepy John Estes : The Legend of Sleepy John Estes
In the late '50s Sleepy John Estes wasn't nearly as visible as he had been before and during World War II -- in fact, he had become so obscure that some historians wondered if he had died.
But the blues veteran was still very much alive, and in 1962 a 63-year-old Estes (some claimed he was 58 or 57) made an impressive comeback with The Legend of Sleepy John Estes.

Nicknamed "Sleepy" John Estes, supposedly because of his ability to sleep standing up, he teamed with mandolinist Yank Rachell and harmonica player Hammie Nixon to play the houseparty circuit in and around Brownsville in the early '20s.
Never an outstanding guitarist, Estes relied on his expressive voice to carry his music, and the recordings he made from 1929 on have enormous appeal and remain remarkably accessible today.

Sleepy John's songs offer glimpses into the life of the poor fl community in which he lived and worked for most of his life.

CD review: "I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More"
One of the most accessible of the traditional country blues musicians, Sleepy John Estes had a beautiful voice and warm sound on guitar.
Estes' genius as composer is evidenced, at least in part, by the fact that although the latest of these tracks is a half-century old and Estes is accompanied only by his own guitar, all sound as contemporary as any song you'd hear in a blues club tonight.
Also, many of the titles here will be familiar from covers by other artists, especially "Milk Cow Blues" and "Someday Baby Blues" (often recorded under the title "Worried Life Blues").

He usually recorded with a jug band, which gave his music a great variety of textures...mandolin player James "Yank" Rachell and harpist Hammie Nixon are prominent on most of these songs, and Estes is occationally backed by piano and second guitar as well.
John Estes' music swings with a loose, relaxed feel that isn't heard on many prewar blues records, and it is some of the most melodic acoustic blues you'll ever hear.
