This research has shown not only that at least two distinct species of slender loris inhabit the island of Sri Lanka (one larger grey one living in the dry zone, and one tiny red one endemic to the wet zone), but that these animals, particularly the latter, are highly endangered.
Threats to slender lorises include severe habitat loss and habitat encroachment, electrocution on uninsulated power lines, death by vehicles whilst crossing the road, and collection for the pet trade and use in ayurvedic medicine.
Though surveys are still underway, particularly of slender lorises inhabiting the difficult terrain of the highlands of Sri Lanka, I am now implementing a long-term study of red lorises in the island’s Southern Province.
