Timbre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Similarly the specific inharmonic timbre of Thai metallophones would produce the seven-tone near-equal temperament they do indeed employ.
The five-note sometimes near-equal tempered slendro scale provides the most consonance in the combination of the inharmonic spectra of Balinese metallophones with harmonic instruments such as the stringed rebab.
The timbre of a sound is also greatly affected by the following factors: attack or interonset interval, decay, sustain, release and transients.

Timbre - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
William Sethares (2004) wrote that just intonation and the western equal tempered scale are derived from the harmonic spectra/timbre of most western instruments.

 Central Javanese Gamelan
It shows no sign of mixed objectives, but is rather a "pure" style.
There are two scales in Javanese gamelan music, "slendro" (pentatonic) and "pelog" (heptatonic-pentatonic).
Tuning is not standard, rather each gamelan set will have a distinctive tuning.

 Records International Catalogue August 1998
LOU HARRISON (b.1917): Concerto for Violin with Percussion Orchestra, Canticle No. 1, Suite for Percussion, Canticle No.3 for Ocarina, Guitar and Percussion, Fugue for Percussion, Song of Quetzalcoatl, Concerto in Slendro for Violin, Celesta, 2 Tack Pianos and Percussion.
The 1959 concerto features a soloist who plays only three melodic intervals throughout over the backdrop of more odd percussion instruments than you can shake a stick at (whack with a stick?); the Concerto in Slendro (1961) adds two tack pianos to the gamelan-imitating mixture.
These two works embrace the remaining five: all for ensembles of both usual and highly unusual percussion instruments (the guitar in Canticle 3 adding a Hispanic mode to the colorful goings-on).

Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin Visitors' Book
The bit about gamelan at the end of the book also piqued my interest (there was a gamelan ensemble at one of the many universities I dropped out of, and I'd liked it), but I couldn't do anything with it on my keyboard.
Last year I e-Bayed a used Roland HandSonic, which microtunes easily and has some gamelan presets, now I'm doing 'psychedelic gamelan music' - I just discovered a 'just' slendro tuning, and am trying a tempered pentatonic scale (all 240 cent intervals).
I can microtune some 'soft synths' and have some 'real' gong-chimes and metallophones and am making more 'instruments' from trash cans and stuff.
