Sleng Teng - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sleng Teng is the name given to the first fully computerised riddim(rhythm) in Jamaican music.
Sleng Teng is among the most versioned of Jamaican riddims, with Reggae-Riddims listing over 180 versions.
Several new cuts on the original Sleng Teng were also released by Jammys in 2005 in celebration of the riddim's 20th anniversary.

 Jamaica Gleaner - 'Sleng Teng' turns 20 - Sunday | May 8, 2005
The 'Sleng Teng' was released under the King Jammy imprint and featured several tracks which are memorable numbers inside the dancehall.
Wayne Smith's 'Under Mi Sleng Teng' became the anthem for the rhythm, while other tracks like 'Pumpkin Belly' by Tenor Saw, 'Trash and Ready' by Supercat, 'Buddy Bye' by Johnny Osbourne and 'Call The Police' by John Wayne are still hailed as 'foundation tunes'.
To commemorate the 20th birthday of the Sleng Teng, King Jammy has released the rhythm again, this time with a string of younger and fresher artistes recorded on it.

In 1985 he recorded a youth singer called Wayne Smith with a tune called "Under Me Sleng Teng", which was to alter irrevocably the nature, and revolutionize the sound, of reggae music.
The basis for "Sleng Teng" was a Casio "Music Box" and one of the "rock" rhythms from the box was adapted and slowed down to become a "reggae" rhythm.
In 1995, he revived his most innovative tune on Sleng Teng Extravaganza '95, featuring the modish stars updating the rhythm with their own interpretations.

Wayne Smith's "Under Me Sleng Teng" is the first reggae tune to use a digital rhythm track.
As Beth Lesser documents in her book, "King Jammy's," the 'sleng teng' riddim--first unleashed in a Waterhouse sound clash between Jammy's and Black Scorpio--had a truly revolutionary effect on reggae.
Still, Wyne Smith's "Under Me Sleng Teng" remains the first digital riddim track, and thus, is recognize as the root of ragga.

It's true that several tunes pointed in the direction of this most fundamental of shifts - the semi-computerised experiments of Paul Blake and the Blood Fire Posse of the year before, for instance, or the 'robotic' rhythms created by Sly and Robbie for their Taxi imprint in the first half of the decade.
In addition, most of them were hurriedly recording near relatives to "Sleng Teng" - including Jammy's former boss, King Tubby, for the tune that launched his Firehouse label, Anthony 'Red' Rose's Tempo.
A couple of years later, Jammy scored another enormous dancehall hit with Pinchers' Agony - despite the closeness of its rhythm to "Sleng Teng".

However, his finest moment came early 1985 when he was directly involved in what is considered by many to be a pivotal phase in the Jamaican recording industry.
Wayne Smith's "Under Me Sleng Teng" was the first fully-computerised riddim to properly blow up in Jamaica.
Not only became "Under Me Sleng Teng" a massive hit around the world, its riddim continued to provide the basis for a number of reggae dancehall hits in the next two decades.

The first in what I assume will be an ongoing series of one-rhythm albums, Sleng Teng Progress resurrects the legendary "Under Mi Sleng Teng" riddim that kick-started the digital dancehall revolution in 1985.
Plus, the album features an attractive all-star line-up headed by Sizzla, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, and Anthony B (Not surprisingly, they lead off the album, as the recognizability of the artists dwindles down to Singer J and Christopher by the end.).
Still, it all seems fairly pointless, unless you've never heard the Sleng Teng riddim before...in which case, you need to get out more.

Wayne Smith's 1985 Jammy-produced hit, "Under Me Sleng Teng," sparked a digital revolution in the reggae world, as practically every producer of note attempted to imitate the new sound.
With the exception of Wayne Smith's dancehall vocal, every element of the monumental "Under Me Sleng Teng" was digital.
In the mold of the one-rhythm albums then in vogue, Jammy released an entire set of "Sleng Teng" versions on his own dubbed Sleng Teng Extravaganza.

Even included is a decent funk/hip-hop remix of "Sleng Teng" by Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs (The choice of beats on the remix is pretty good, since it's a slow, reggae-paced rhythm that doesn't sound too much like the dated Cypress Hill sound.).
These 4 songs are essential listening for beginning reggae fans, but those who are more experienced will know and/or have them already (although "Pass the Kutchie" is harder to find than it should be), so it's up to the other tracks to draw many listeners in.
Meanwhile, Ninjaman's "Legalize the Herb" and U-Roy's "Chalice in the Palace" have excellent rhythm tracks, but they have been put to better use before.
