Sleuth (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Thomson dismissed it as "trite" in his "Biographical Dictionary of Film," condemning it as "a grotesque throwback to theatricality, indicative of Mankiewicz's readiness to be fooled by cleverness."
The film is noted for its prop-cluttered set (courtesy of production designer Ken Adam), quasi-baroque music score (from John Addison, whose music was a replacement Oscar nominee after Nino Rota's score for "The Godfather" was ruled ineligible) and its Oscar-nominated performances from Olivier and Caine.
A line from the film; "A jumped-up pantry boy who doesn't know his place" was used as a lyric in The Smiths' 1983 single, "This Charming Man."

 DETECTFILM
The detective genre in film is difficult to define because the content and conventions of the detective film can be seen as crossing over into other genres, and it can be regarded as a subcategory of the overarching genre of the crime film (along with the gangster film, the thriller, and the social-problem film).
The narrative of the detective film follows the hero's investigation of a crime; however, it also offers an investigation of the detective as his masculinity is tested and proven through his success in solving the case.
Film noir is generally regarded as genre or film style that began with The Maltese Falcon (1941) and ended with Touch of Evil (1958), a group of films that were visually, as well as morally, dark.

SOME NOTES ON NOIR AND HARD-BOILED
Many films noirs use the narrative device usually referred to as voice-over, either as a framing device at the beginning and end of the film or within the course of the narrative to introduce and comment within a flashback.
The unities of narrative person are violated often in the film, a typical example being the sequence depicting the kidnaping of Joe's brother and the murder of the bookkeeper, which could not have been observed by Joe, since he was not aware of these facts later in the narrative.
The film is introduced in voice-over by Waldo, who is not the protagonist, and about a quarter of the way into the film he begins narrating a series of flashbacks, between each of which Waldo's point-of-view is re-emphasized by returning to the present for a closeup of him before he launches into another reminiscence.

Sleuth, a 1972 "thinking person's thriller," is a rich, engaging motion picture with surprises lurking in the shadows behind every narrative corner.
Sleuth is easily one of his meatiest roles -- a chance to let go and act with relish.
It's easy enough to guess that Sleuth began life on the stage - the narrative, with its limited setting (most of the action takes place within a few rooms in Andrew's house) and focus on dialogue and character interaction is the kind of approach one would expect from a play.

Sleuth sounds like some standard detectives fair and this is not standard.
It is hard to describe the film without giving away a twist or turn but the begining is fairly safe.
Sleuth boasts a twisty script by Anthony Shaffer, calculated to drive an audience to distraction; and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve) shows a keen eye for the telling detail.

Michael Caine at the time the film was made wasn't seen on a par with Lawrence Olivier, but this movie took the critics by the neck, made them sit up and acknowledge that Caine was the equal, if not the superior actor.
The film is about humiliation games and it comes to a shuddering and shocking climax.

It's the story of super sleuth Daryl Zero (Bill Pullman), the renowned private investigator who solved The Case of the Man With Mismatched Shoelaces and The Case of the Guy Who Lied About His Age.
Daryl Zero, as one of the film's slogans goes, is "the world's most private detective." His unbending procedures include refusing ever to meet his clients.
And yet, in significant regard, Daryl Zero is actually a canny modernization of that king of sleuths himself, Sherlock Holmes.

But it remains one of the most gripping films I've ever seen, with two actors at the height of their powers delighting in the sort of dialogue most performers can only dream about.
Although the pleasures of the film are many besides the plot, a first viewing should be in a state of near ignorance, so if you haven't seen the film you might want to keep your wits about you and dodge down to the review of the disc itself.
If you are a fan of the film, this is an essential purchase since you won't find a better presentation of it for home viewing.

Adapted for the screen by Anthony Schaffer, the author of the play, and directed by one of the legends of Hollywood, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, SLEUTH is the perfect movie for you if you like excellent actors, Laurence Olivier and Michal Caine for instance, a subtle plot with unexpected twists and a superior cinematography.
Joseph L. Mankiewicz had to nail the audience in some way because SLEUTH is not a play with a lot of characters and could have discouraged the viewer if the director hadn't been such a talent.
Another (innocent) trick of Mankiewicz is to film the puppets or the masks as if they were alive, you always have the feeling that the characters are not alone in the mansion.

With the film's previous incarnation on video looking like a bad television broadcast, this digitized and widescreened edition is much appreciated.
To give any more of the plot would be to rob those who haven't seen this film of a great deal of pleasure, not the least of which is the pairing of Olivier and Caine, who both give remarkable performances.
Ironically, Sleuth may seem old fashioned to a 90's audience, and like a mystery by Vera Caspary or a record of Cole Porter, the film may seem sadly like the stuff of nostalgia.

The Nomad Theatre, East Horsley, Surrey, UK: Production Sleuth
Sleuth juggles a number of themes - deceit, jealousy, game playing, class war, British arrogance, xenophobia, and the humiliation of the outsider - and manages not to drop any of them.
Sleuth is a highly complex piece of theatre and the Nomads' production rose to its challenges admirably.
Richard Seymour's direction was refreshingly dynamic, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats as the characters alternated between the roles of persecutor and victim, as they participated in a series of "games" involving the psychological torture of each other.

Sleuth - Review - Think of the perfect film.... this is it
In 1970 Anthony Shaffer, who is famous for writing the screenplay for films such as 'Frenzy' and 'The Wicker Man', and who also had a very famous twin brother (Peter Shaffer, of 'Equus' and 'Amadeus' fame), wrote a play that he intended to be a detective whodunnit.
The director of the film was the Oscar-winning Joseph L Mankiewicz, in what turned out to be his last film.
Not a lot of people know this, but the film was actually nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Director for Mankiewicz, and Best Actor for BOTH Caine and Olivier (this film is THAT good that I feel this was fully justified).

 (DVD Review) Sleuth
Adapted from a stage play, "Sleuth" is a clever whodunit thriller, ostensibly starring only the inimitable Sir Laurence Olivier and the magnificent Michael Caine, as dual protagonist/antagonists, out to best the other in a game of psychology and (possible) murder.
This film is just magnificent on many levels: mystery-thriller, character study, and psychological; and it is to Anchor Bay's credit that they've picked this lovely film to remaster and bring to a whole new generation.
It may just be that, as a stage adaptation, very narrow lenses were used in the filming, which would account for the small amount of letterboxing.

The film requires the two to be on screen for nearly the full duration of the movie, so it is obviously essential that they perform to a high standard; and I can confirm they most certainly do just that.
The film is very different and over the top in it's style anyway; it plays out almost like a moving detective novel, and the fact that both actors have a tendency to camp it up gives the movie something that it would not have had otherwise.
The film is based on a stage play by Anthony Shaffer, and this is evident throughout the movie as it plays out just like a stage play on the big screen.
