 Ummera Smoked Silver Eel
On the wildest of autumn nights, when the rivers are in full flood, the transformed 'Silver' eels begin the descent of the rivers to start their migration back to the very sea weed that they began life on.
We recommend that you skin the eel, peeling it like a banana, then slice it thinly lengthwise; with a spoon, scrape the jelly and oil from the inside of the skin and serve with the sliced eel.
We trace this remarkable species from the sea weed that it was spawned on in the Sargasso Sea, off the coast of Florida, through its life and to its return to the Sargasso Sea and final death.

 Adventure Gamers : Still Life
It is not surprising that he falls hard for Ida. Her friends are exclusively drawn from the seamier slice of life, though she does what she can for them and her concern draws Gus deeply into the search for the killer who preys upon them.
Bottom-line: Still Life tells a story that is a masterful blend of challenge, characters and story.
Gus is a would-be artist and part-time private detective haunted by flashes of psychic visions, who has created a new life for himself far from the horrifying murders that plague his past.

True Stories is a must-see slice of life, with a twist.
Byrne also introduces into the story Miss Rollings, the Laziest Woman in the World (Swoosie Kurtz)-a woman who never gets out of bed.
Byrne closes True Stories the same way opened it- a young girl playing alone on a dirt road cutting though an expanse of green Texas plain and halving the blue sky of the horizon.

USATODAY.com - TV crime shows are busting out
Consumers spent more than $1 billion last year on TV shows on DVD, and crime dramas are a popular slice of that spending pie.
Lacey rattles off a list of crime shows new and old that have become available on DVD, including Brooklyn South, Crime Story, Monk, Prime Suspect, Baretta and nearly two dozen others.
Though a top-rated crime show often turns into a top-selling DVD, sometimes the reverse is true.

Table of Contents and Excerpt, Shrayer, The World of Nabokov's Stories
The short story must have a definite plan; it cannot be what in literary jargon is called 'a slice of life.' The masters of the short story, Chekhov, Maupassant, as well as the sublime scribe of the Joseph story in the Book of Genesis, knew exactly where they were going.
Nabokov links his experience as a writer concerned with immortalizing memory via language to that of a reader to whom the recorded memory of his story is ultimately addressed.
While Nabokov's masters of the novel might have lain outside the Russian literary tradition, his short stories were forged in the course of a dialogue with his predecessors in russkii rasskaz (the Russian short story).

 Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)
Chips' entire life from when he joined the school in 1870 until his death, thus covering a fair slice of British history, a slice that was at the beginning of the period in which things began to move at an ever-quickening pace.
Chips is not a very popular teacher and is a very shy chap with little life outside of the school grounds.
There are some clever little interludes used to show the passage of time, such as two boys walking down a corridor talking about the new invention of the telephone, which really places the story against the changes of the times in a very clever way.

Albero degli Zoccoli movie for sale
Olmi's slice-of-life film--which he wrote, directed, shot, and edited--uses this central story as a launchpad to document, in moving detail, rural life under oppressive poverty.
Dramatizing a year in the life of northern Italian peasants at the turn of the century, Ermanno Olmi's THE TREE OF WOODEN CLOGS pays loving tribute to both the neo-realist style of filmmaking and a rural way of life that no longer exists.
As the camera lingers patiently over women handwashing laundry on the banks of a river or farmers preparing a pig for slaughter, the quasi-documentary images transform these mundane tasks of peasant life into an almost sacramental epic of grace and beauty.

Dan Barry has given us a slice-of-life story that took me back to the days of my childhood, places I had long forgotten.
Perhaps anyone's struggle to survive a deadly illness transforms their life; as Barry puts it, he knew "what it was like to nearly drown," and then felt the "sting of a saltwater blessing" on his face.
Although Barry is the New York Times's "About New York" columnist, his memoir isn't the story of his award-winning journalism career.

Yet Another Comics Blog: Quick GN Reviews
For the majority of the book it's a nice little slice of life story, as the titular Scott Pilgrim's life of slacker bliss is interrupted by dreams of a delivery girl whose life crosses his.
Basically what happens is that little by little the story is diverging from our reality and yet it's not totally obvious (I originally took Ramona's highway through Scott's dreams as a more metaphorical than literal path) until all of a sudden there's this explosion of weirdness.
See, I'm far into the loving Scott Pilgrim camp and I think that the jarring fight scene is actually one of the most interesting things going on, because when you then go back and reread the book, you can't be fooled again, if that makes any sense.

 What is Storying?
Stories are a convenient way of capturing a slice of life and retaining it an account of the event.
These are the stories which were skipped over earlier when the listeners may have gotten side-tracked or their hostility increased by hearing them without the larger context of the Bible story and the preparation and guidance by the Holy Spirit as new believers.
At the resurrection the women ran to tell the disciples the story that the tomb was empty and the vision of angels telling that Jesus was risen.

 USCCB Reviews - Swimming Upstream
Mulcahy directs this slice-of-life drama with a sure hand, and uses a split screen sportslike technique for the swimming scenes and fanciful water imagery, which adds visual variety.
Bravura performances by Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis, and a story of professional triumph over domestic adversity, don't entirely compensate for the sordidness of this true-life story of Australian swimming champion Tony Fingleton in "Swimming Upstream" (MGM).
Directed by Russell Mulcahy from a script by Fingleton, the film charts Tony's progress from young boy to world-class swimmer under the resolutely disapproving eye of a father who doesn't love him.

 Spindletop Boom Days
Like no other story of Spindletop and the oil boom, this narrative history is a “slice of life” seen through the eyes of the men and women who lived through those rowdy, entertaining, exciting days in Southeast Texas.
In Spindletop Boom Days Paul Spellman weaves together first-person narratives to tell the story of this moment in history and to describe the day-to-day life of those involved with the Spindletop gusher.
The discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901 revolutionized the oil and drilling industry in the United States: before Spindletop's seventy thousand barrels of oil a day, no other well in the United States had produced more than three thousand barrels in a whole month.

Book Reviews - Saul and Patsy by Charles Baxter
Charles Baxter has written Saul and Patsy as an examination of American life via the story of one couple's love story.
Dealing with a multitude of issues besides portraying a slice of life, this novel has received mostly positive reviews.
He loves Patsy dearly, but a combination of the birth of their daughter, a tragedy involving a young man who became attached to him, and his constant self-obsession strain both their marriage and their lives.

 Manito (2002)
You'll find little story in this open-ended slice-of-life-in-da-hood flick which is quick to get down and dirty with family issues and personal problems.
"Manito" tells of urban life in a NYC Puerto Rican hood as it follows a buff ex-con, Junior (Franky G), and his little bro, Manny (Minaya), as Manny graduates High School only to see his dreams for the future derailed.
What story is in this short 78 minute flick is nothing we haven't seen before but it is very well done, especially for an indie.

Synopsis: Told like a slice-of-life music documentary, a satiristic chronicle of the seamier side of life as experienced by thirtysomething punk-rock musicians.
Fifteen years later, the tragic shooting of aging Bucky Haight brings Hard Core Logo together for an anti-handgun benefit gig as the story follows these four characters who struggle to reconcile their mythic past with the hangover realities of the present.

Jude the Obscure is not so much a slice of life as it is a slice out of life.

H-Net Review: Tricia Redeker Hepner on Silly Mammo: An Ethiopian Tale
With large, colorful drawings depicting the characters and scenery in lively detail and a presentation style that follows traditional Ethiopian storytelling patterns--complete with an elderly blind man calling the children around him on the first page to hear the tale--Silly Mammo feels like an authentic slice of Ethiopian village life.
The focus on human imperfections could inadvertently shape children's ideas about Ethiopian people and culture if teachers and parents are not vigilant in contextualizing the story as a folktale and discussing the positive attributes of the protagonists and other characters.
With 100 percent of its sales profits supporting the establishment of Ethiopian Books for Children and Educational Foundation in Ethiopia, educators, parents, and children can feel good about the story itself as well as its socially conscious contribution to education and literacy.

Comic Book Resources - Comic Book News, Reviews and Commentary - Updated Daily!
Another entertaining theme anthology from Ferret, though it's not clear what the six stories all have to do with space; several seem to be just slice of life stuff only related to the theme by the wildest stretch of imagination.
It's at the stage of the story where it's hard to judge much without seeing how it ends, but the major flaw with the story is that while the writing's good and the dialogue sounds natural, the hero is the least interesting character in the book.
Comics have always been about the restriction of available real estate, and, despite the rise of the graphic novel, that continues to be the case.
