Bike It .net - technical help for cycling in Northern Ireland. Bikes, parts, technical help
Knobbly tyres, unlike slick tyres, have a high level of rolling resistance, making them slow on tarmac and requiring quite a bit of effort to push.
The purpose of this tyre is to provide a tyre with a balance of both the attributes of a 'slick' tyre (low rolling resistance on tarmac) and 'knobbly' tyres (grip on loose and slippy terrain).
Although this type of tyre does not give the extreme advantage of either tyre in their sole environment, it does provide an excellent balance of the two and is extremely useful for people who use their bike regularly on all types of surface.

  Slick tyre
A slick tyre is a type of tyre that has no tread pattern, used predominantly in auto racing.
However, on wet roads, the traction of a slick tyre is severely diminished because it has no tread pattern to expel water from its contact area.
They are used most widely in auto racing where competitors can choose to use different tyres based on the weather conditions and can often change tyres during a race.

Tyres 'spring' and deform over bumps in a controlled, regular fashion, and the A1 teams and engineers will use this property to best set-up their A1 cars for great handling, and close racing.

 Tyre tread
Slick tyres are the ones that F1 drivers use most of the time - i.e.
The particular pattern of grooves that the manufacturers apply to their wet tyres varies but they are all designed to remove as much water as possible from the racetrack, to allow the tyre to grip.
Intermediate tyres are exactly what their name suggests - a compromise between a full wet and a fully slick tyre.

This non-toxic, non-flammable liquid is simply painted on to the surface of the tyre, whether treaded or slick, and left to cure for 3-4 days to ensure adequate penetration and softening.
GRIP uses a long-lasting, proven formula that stays in the tyre for much longer periods (it does not evaporate) and so is ideal for circuit racing, karting and motorcycle racing - in fact virtually any road race environment.

Slick tyre   (Site not responding. Last check: )
By having no tread pattern the tyre presents the largest possible contact patch to the road for any given tyre dimensions.
This reduces the heat generated by deformation, and thus allows the tire to be constructed with a softer compound without the tire blistering or overheating (a phenomena most drivers will refer to in a manner such as "the tires were getting greasy").
However, on wet roads, the traction of a slick tyre is severely diminished because it has no tread pattern to expel water from its contact patch.

The tyre is specially designed for sporty drivers; a significant group of motorists who want handling and responsiveness paired with, for sports-car drivers, an acceptable level of comfort when they get behind the wheel.

The outside area of a tyre's pattern is the key at higher speeds on dry surfaces, especially with the extra force caused by cornering.
