Slip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slips are usually caused by inadequate synchronization of the two clocks controlling the transmission or by poor reception of the signal.
In boating, a slip is a ramp used to move boats and flying boats to and from the water.
In vehicle dynamics, slip is the relative motion between a tyre and the road surface it is moving on.

Slip (aeronautics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In aeronautics, a slip or forward slip is a maneuver where an airplane pilot rolls the aircraft in one direction with the ailerons and yaws it in the opposite direction with the rudder.
In smaller planes, slipping is a common technique to correct for a crosswind on landing.
In such a slip landing, the pilot uses the roll of the airplane to correct for the drift caused by wind and uses the rudder to keep the airplane lined up with the runway.

In boating, a marine slip is a ramp into the water used to launch and retrieve boats and flying boats.
In water transport, a ferry slip or barge slip is a shore terminal designed to securely and easilly receive the ferry.
In clothing, a slip is a woman's underdress extending from the bosom downward to near the edge of the outer dress or skirt to help it hang smoothly and to prevent chafing of the skin from coarse fabrics such as wool.

Slips (Keith Barr)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The forward slip is used to lose altitude rapidly, and the side slip is used to remain aligned with the runway during a crosswind landing.
In *large* aircraft side slips are much more common than forward slips, because needing to use a forward slip would generally indicate botched planning on the approach.
Forward slips are much more common in light aircraft, especially older models that are not equipped with flaps (an invention that can be used to take the place of the forward slip to some extent).

Electric motors & motor controls engineering - Estimating Power from slip -> temperature correction
Keep in mind that the amount of resistance in the stator of an AC motor affects both torque and slip, similar to the effect of resistance in the rotor circuit (actually the same effect as rotor current is reflected to the stator).
The slip technique is not nearly as accurate or useful when the load of a single motor is being evaluated.
There is a different approximate slip relationship for the slip near the slip equal to zero and different relationship for the slip from 0 to 1.

aerodynamics - how aircraft fly   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A slip is created by applying rudder in the opposite direction to the turn.
If the wind is from the right of the aircraft, the aircraft will drift to the left side of the runway unless some force is applied in the opposite direction keep the aircraft straight with and on the centreline of the runway.
The forward slip is used primarily on aircraft with no flaps.

Deceptive trade practices regulatory authority formerly residing in the CAB was transferred to the DOT when the CAB was abolished in 1985.
We note again, however, that the DOT retains authority to investigate unfair and deceptive practices and unfair methods of competition by airlines, and may order an airline to cease and desist from such practices or methods of competition.

This Court concluded that, because exclusive authority for aeronautical activities was granted to the state agency, that agency was not subject to local land use ordinances or regulations if those ordinances or regulations related to aeronautical activities.
The 1996 amendments to the Aeronautics Code simply operated to clarify the law in an area where townships had never previously had express legislative authority to control aeronautical activities.
The changes made to the Aeronautics Code were intended to clarify the MAC's authority over aeronautical matters, as well as promote uniformity and safety in air travel.

However, the dimension of MEMS has the order of molecular mean free path and, consequently, one cannot apply the continuum mechanics equations, but it is necessary to apply methods of the Rarefied Gas Dynamics.
So, the slip and jump coefficients have the same importance in continuum mechanics as the transport coefficients such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient, etc.
In the present project, it is proposed to develop new numerical and analytical methods of calculation of the slip and jump boundary coefficients taking into account the internal structure of gaseous molecules.

Dynamic slip may be inhibited at shallow levels by the presence of the slide and the change in fault dip with depth; however, if the shallow thrust sheet does fail, the shallow slip may or may not be related to tectonic slip on the deep fault segment.
In either case, observations of near-surface slip or large slip events at the toe of the slide may not be indicative of tectonic slip or large earthquakes at depth on the fault.
The rupture propagation and slip distributions obtained for each model are similar, thus we have showed that the solution of the dynamic problem is non-unique.

It is shown that the same number of boundary conditions are required for slip flows as for gas-dynamical flows, although the differential equations of motion for slip flows are of higher order than those of continuum gas-dynamics.
Expressions for the second approximations to the slip velocity and temperature jump are obtained.
The general equations obtained are applied to three specific problems: the propagation of sound waves in rarefied gases, high-speed Couette flow of a rarefied gas, and slip-flow between concentric cylinders in relative rotary motion.

The aeronautics industry is diverse, ranging from large airframe and engine manufacturers to numerous producers of avionics, smaller aircraft, and parts.
Despite the similarity of methods they apply, Asian countries' aeronautics industries are not equally developed and can be expected to continue to develop at varying rates because of differences in their political and economic environments.
Observers believe Asian forays into aeronautics may not be motivated by profit in the near or mid-term, but by the intention to increase a country's baseline technology level and create jobs.

Her most recent study was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

 SUBCOMMITTEE ON SPACE AND AERONAUTICS
Its goal is to develop and demonstrate in flight the technologies necessary to build a fully-reusable, "single stage to orbit" (SSTO) launch system which could operate much more cheaply than the Space Shuttle and current expendable systems.
According to a recent General Accounting Office report (GAO/NSIAD-99-176) and previous testimony before the subcommittee, the project has met with significant problems in each of the three key technical areas of required progress: composite cryogenic fuel tanks, an efficient "linear aerospike" rocket engine, and a metallic thermal protection system.
So far, these and other difficulties have caused a schedule slip of 16 months and some increase in the project’s total cost (mostly borne by industry), as well as some reduction in the overall technical performance goals of the project.
