  Jig - MSN Encarta
Jig, lively folk dance, a step dance in which one or two soloists perform rapid, intricate, hopping steps to music in ½ time or (a “slip-jig”) in ¾ time.
The jig was adopted in France at the court of Louis XIV, where, as the gigue, it became a more subdued dance for couples.
Jig also refers to any country dance tune in jig time and to any set dance (a country dance for a group of couples) to a jig tune.

The dancers must perform a jig which is set in 6/8 time and/or a reel, which is set in 2/4 or 4/4 time.
Two more dances, the slip jig and hornpipe, are added to this class (the slip jig is a ladies-only dance).
The slip jig, set in the unusual and unique-to-Irish-dance 9/8 time, is performed in soft shoes and is perhaps the most graceful of the step dances; consisting of light hopping and sliding actions.

Jig - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The jig (sometimes seen in its French language or Italian language forms gigue or giga) is a folk dance type as well as the accompanying dance tune type, popular in Ireland and Scotland, and particularly associated with the former.
It is transcribed in a time which is a multiple of three, 12/8 time for a 'single jig' or 'slide', 6/8 time for a 'double jig', and 9/8 time for a 'slip jig'.
As with most other types of dance tunes in Irish music, at a session or a dance it is common for two or more jigs to be strung together, flowing on without interruption.

Slip jig and hop jig accompaniment
The slip jig is in 9/8 time, with three beats to the bar like the waltz, and three eights to the beat like the jig:
Despite the time signature, the slip jig is actually quite similar to the jig.
Both rhtyms really emphasizes the 3-eight notes in a bar pattern, and it doesn't really matter that much whether there are two (as in the jig) or three (as in the slip jig) beats to the bar.

Jig (Gigue) Dance - Streetswings Dance History archives
The Irish Cengail seems to be cognate with the old French verb, Ginguer (to move the feet,) and the refrain of this dance song was perhaps like that of the Fer Gigaoila, which consisted of a humorous kind of giggling, in short catches of the breath, accompanied by sudden starts of the body.
The Jig derives its name from gigg or giga, the name of a short piece of music much in vogue in olden times, which was of a joyous lively character, and consisted of two parts of eight bars each, and these of the shortest notes.
The basic music defines the speed of the dance with the music for a Jig being in 6/8 time and a slip Jig is 9/8.

This set of G minor jigs starts off with two different versions of "The Old Dutch Churn." I found the second one (which comes from the playing of Buddy MacMaster and Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald) first, and then I discovered the first version (which is in 9/8) later on.
The final tune is a Scottish jig that was composed by William Marshall - it appears in his 1822 collection.

The slip jig is often described as "floating", and even as "appearing not to touch the ground from start to finish".
If slip jigs are incorporated into sets or ceilidh dances, I think they're generally a bit faster, maybe 100 bpm.
