 KAP knots and hitches
Knots and hitches are utilized for many purposes--joining two lines together, making a loop in a line, shortening lines, stopping lines, and attaching lines to anchors--posts, rings, cleats, etc. In fact, it is impossible to fly kites without the ability to tie a few basic knots.
A knot or hitch has two characteristics in terms of its potential effectiveness--strength and slippage, both of which are important for deciding which knot to use for a given purpose.
This compound knot combines the characteristics of the clove and half hitch into a knot that is quite strong and highly resistant to slippage.

The slip knot is a directional knot—it tightens when loaded one way but spills when pulled from the other side.
To tie: A slip knot is tied by taking a counterclockwise turn with the working end to the front, then capturing a bight from the working end in the turn.
The knot known as the slip knot, though, is a slipped overhand knot.

When tightening this knot, it is useful to first slip the knot over a spar from the kite in question (or one of the same diameter) to ensure that the loop is a reasonably snug fit.
This knot can be used to attach a loose end to a continuous length of line in such a way that the knot will hold fast in normal use but can be moved up or down the line for adjustment when a little pressure is applied.
The knot employed is a basic Running Knot with a flange in the line serving to stop the tied end from slipping through the knot.

Slip Knots are a fast way to finish off cord necklaces, I like them better then using coil or foldover crimps because they are adjustable and you don't need to use findings for them.

Pull the knot cord, not the end, but the necklace part of it, to tighten the loop around the end of the cord.

But the knot is still easy to undo and can be removed like a normal larks head to leave the normal loop in the end of the line.
Using the just created (slip) loop (the unclosed larks head knot) use that to pull more of the line though it as if you were making a second larks head with the first.
The result is a slip knot which is suitable for attaching a kite line to a thick spar, rod, handle, or fishing reels.

Ian's Shoelace Site - Slipping Shoelace Knots? Crooked Bows?
The Two Loop Knot (or "Bunny Ears" knot) is one of the most common reasons people inadvertently tie a "Slip" knot because they generally use the same movement (either "Left over Right" or "Right over Left") for both the Starting Knot and the Finishing Bow.
In true knotting terminology, a properly tied shoelace bow is called a "Slipped Reef Knot", whilst an incorrectly tied shoelace bow is called a "Slipped Granny Knot".
In fact, because I've used the same Starting Knot for all of the knots on this site, I actually drew some of the knots in reverse to the way I was shown in order to ensure that all of the finished knots would end up secure.

The idea is to tie the ladder up with a "slip" knot.
With the ladder down, tie one end securely to the bottom rung and tie the other end to a railing near this knot when the ladder is up (you will adjust the length later).
A bit of practice is required to make the knot tight enough to hold but not so tight as to bind when released.

 Decorative Knots
Like the Braid Knot, this can be used as a decorative "pull" at the end of a rope or string, or as a "friendship braid," or as a decorative handle, and so on.
To tie this knot, first lay out the rope on a table and form a bight facing to the left (which will become the loop for this lanyard knot), then form a small loop with the upper end of the rope (picture 1).
This is a decorative knot which is often asked about, and it has a practical purpose as a way to add weight to the end of a rope for throwing it to someone else (as in heaving a line from one boat to another).

This is really the same as if you were tying a regular knot, except that you are working with a loop instead of a loose end.
Kids find it easier to learn this "Two Loop Knot" because it's really the same as tying the Starting Knot except that the ends are formed into loops.
This page is not intended to teach this alternative knot, rather, its purpose is to show how this knot compares to both the Standard Shoelace Knot and my own Ian Knot, as well as showing the correct way to tie it so that it doesn't form a "Slip" knot (which comes undone).

 Miscellaneous Knots
When the second Overhand Knot is tied in picture 2, notice that the end of rope which is coming from the right has crossed over the end of rope which is coming from the left.
Many knots can be "slipped," meaning that instead of bringing the end of the rope through the last part of the knot, you actually push a bight (a doubled rope) through instead.
Using a single loop knot such as an Alpine Butterfly or a Slip Knot makes a sharp bend for the rope to go around as you pull on it, which can lower the breaking strength of the rope and shorten the life of the rope.
