I realize how beneficial this National Conservation Area will be to the quality of life of those living in southern Nevada and in all of these United States.
The ceremony began with a bit of improvisation, due to technical difficulties - the sound system that was supposed to play the National Anthem failed, which led to an unknown audience member chiming in and leading the crowd in an accapello singing of the National Anthem.

What's At Stake: DON'T LET SLOAN CANYON BECOME A HELICOPTER FLIGHT ZONE
Sloan Canyon is the newest addition to the National Landscape Conservation System--26 million acres of Bureau of Land Management lands protected for their spectacular environment and historical and cultural sites.
Sloan Canyon NCA was designated just two years ago by Congress to protect unique petroglyph sites, rugged canyons, and one of the few remaining wild places left near a rapidly growing metropolitan area.
Since all of the flights to the Grand Canyon travel east, a heliport on the east side of the valley makes more sense than the southern proposal that would disrupt the wilds of Sloan Canyon.

 Las Vegas Mercury: Strange bedfellows
Sloan Canyon is one of several areas in Southern Nevada that were protected from development because of their natural and cultural attributes.
The 48,438-acre conservation area at the south end of the Las Vegas Valley was created by a law Reid helped pass called the Clark County Conservation of Public Land and Natural Resources Act.
Frederick's involvement in the early stages of the Sloan Canyon project surely must have come as a surprise to some, since his newspaper is staunchly conservative and has questioned and criticized Reid on many issues.

Las Vegas SUN: People's litter turns thing of beauty into ugly mess
Media attention might be fine for older, more established conservation areas such as the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, but Charles Carroll is still working to put together the management plan and law enforcement presence to protect the 48,000 acres set aside for permanent protection around Sloan Canyon in 2003.
He walks through the desert near the mouth of Sloan Canyon and points out what he hopes will one day be a visitors center that could include an interpretive area, a place for American Indians to practice ceremonies, a research component and other assets for visiting scientists of all kinds.
Despite all the present and potential threats, the BLM officials and local conservation area supporters say they believe that with cooperation, some education and law enforcement, the future of the conservation area and the wilderness is bright.
