Therefore, comparative literature does not come into existence as a sum of the histories of individual national literatures, but with a study of their structural units : these are not a simple sum of individual literary characteristics, phenomena and particles and, therefore, they can be the subject of a special, independent discipline.
Considering Čop's viewpoints on European literature it is also possible to talk about their actual importance for the growth of Slovene poetic creativity since, in indicating the principles of Romantic classicism and a special aesthetic function of romantic forms, he contributed to the beginning of Slovene romantic classicism in Prešeren's central period.
For this comparative-historical understanding of the past phases of Slovene literary development the example of deconstruction is gradually becoming a stimulus towards revaluation of traditional schemes, forms, trends and approaches to comprehend the history of Slovene literature from the standpoint of a comparative literary scholarship.

The selection matches Slovene quality criteria in literature, but the works chosen are neither problematized nor commented upon, a consequence of the fact that the main role in their editing was played by Slovenes.

ON LITERATURE AS A CULTURAL MEMORY
Literature is also responsible for the historical and political representation of the past, since influential models of narrating the "facts" and models of historical "reality" are formed in its fictional words.
In this context, Jüri Talvet (Tartu) demonstrated with Lotman in the case of Estonian literature that it is the peripheral, intermediate "border zones" that accumulate the political, ideological and cultural tensions of intercultural dialogue.
Literature is on the one hand language, the only thing that can still show what is unspeakable and unbearable, either by aiming at documentary truth or autobiography, or by evoking the inexpressible by metaphor, symbolism, grotesque inventions, humor, and irony.

 France Prešeren
Prešeren is a major landmark in the development of the Slovene literature; he was the first to boldly step beyond the borders of provincial poetry and its didactic intentions and establish the poetry as poetry, as autonomous literary art.
He was a capable lawyer, and the reasons for the official rejections were essentially political, primarily a result of his nonconformity, that is, his inability to adapt to the norms of private, political, and religious life of the time and his freethinking attitude, which was not tolerated by the Metternich regime and provincial conservatism.
Prešeren is the first poet in the history of Slovene literature to radically depart from the domestic spiritual tradition and fall from the safe "religion of parents" as he also fell from the optimism of the bourgeois Enlightenment and from all safe systems of thought in general.

Slovene literature, in addition to the less cosmopolitan approach necessarily embraced by the Department of Slavics at the University of Ljubljana, is being considered within a bigger picture encompassing Europe and the world.
When considering the situation of Slovene comparative literature at home and abroad, one comes to the conclusion that there are few things working to the detriment of the scholarship. The most notable of which is the size of Slovenia, modest in both its population and its size.

 Poetry in the Slovene Language
The Slovene language is one of the rare modern languages to have retained the dual-aspect, an archaic grammatical form: in Slovene, this special form - midway between singular and plural - is used to refer to two things or to two people.
The alexandrine was extremely important in the shaping of Slovene poetry during the Age of Enlightenment; in effect, the victory of accentual (more exactly, accentual-syllabic) prosody against the hardly natural efforts towards producing quantitative versification in imitation of Greek and Latin poetry is linked to the introduction of the alexandrine amongst the Slovenes.
It would seem, furthermore, that the political role of literature as a support for cultural and national identity is renewed whenever liberty is in danger; it seems that this moral and political role played by literature in Slovenian society is a form of genetic coding which is reactivated whenever it proves necessary.

 Life and Work
Veno Taufer is one of the founders of Slovene literary modernism, which began flourishing in the 1950s and the 1960s; he is also a precursor of postmodernism.
At the beginning of its literary career Taufer's generation was burdened by its experiences of both of the violence of World War II and of the ideological conflicts that resulted when the Slovene resistance against Nazi occupation became intertwined with the Communist revolution.
As the son of a partisan killed in the war, Taufer was ethically divided between his loyalty to socialist ideals and his contempt for the ideologically oppressive post-war mechanisms and dogmas fostered by the Communist regime.

Although Prešeren was not a prolific writer, his work gave new life to Slovene literature, the development of which had been checked by political and social conditions.
The themes and prosodic structure of his verse set new standards for Slovene writers, and his lyric poems are among the most sensitive, original, and eloquent works in Slovene.
The epic poem Krst pri Savici (1836; "The Baptism by the Savica") treats the conflict between paganism and the early Slovene converts to Christianity and illustrates Prešeren's patriotism, pessimism, and resignation.

Around the same time as when his short stories were published, Remec was the leader of a group of actors in Capljina tank brigade and he directed a number of shows held to celebrate various special events upon a floating stage on the river Neretva.
The themes of his science fiction literature negotiate all necessary and possible co-ordinates: past, present, future, spatially (here, where we are, everywhere on the Earth, in celestial and space worlds, also in no-time and no-space).
This indicates that the older traditionalists in Slovene literature wrongly view science fiction as "incorrect" (not proper) literature that is out of the main literary stream.
