Everclear: Slow Motion Daydream (2003): Reviews
While Slow Motion Daydream isn't quite as fresh as Everclear sounded on their 1994 debut Sparkle and Fade, a close listen reveals an entirely new layer of angst and existential dread that Alexakis and company have added to their repertoire.
Slow Motion Daydream isn't the knockout return to form it might have been, but it's significantly better than might be expected from the first impression its miserable single creates.
Slow Motion Daydream is a real treat for Everclear fans since it's just a continuation of the Everclear sound, even if that sound is contrived and average.

Everclear - Slow Motion Daydream at PLANET42.COM
"Slow Motion Daydream" is not the worst album that has ever been released and it is what you would expect out of the band, but in my opinion that is not necessarily great.
The album is not annoying or poorly recorded; instead the album is just more of what has been on their plate for 10 years now.
"Slow Motion Daydream" is not an album that will appeal to everyone and is not an album that I would recommend to anyone.

 Slow Motion Daydream: 3/17/03
Slow Motion Daydream is an album about life in America circa 2003.
Beyond the social psychology of it all, though, Slow Motion Daydream is ultimately an album about yearning, a set of songs in which nearly every narrator "just wants" one thing or another to make either the world or his own life a little more livable.
With Slow Motion Daydream, Everclear demonstrates once again that you don't have to check your brains at the door to enjoy banging your head a little, and that melody sounds sweet at any volume.

Everclear: Proof Positive : Frontman Alexakis looks inward : Culture : Livelong Days : Colorado Springs Independent : ...
His songs have frequently looked inward, examining everything from his difficult relationship with his father to his brush with death from a drug overdose when he was 22 to his divorce and remarriage three years ago to Stephanie Greig and his life as a father of a young daughter.
But the group's latest effort, Slow Motion Daydream, represents a notable shift as Alexakis, 40, turns his attention to the world around him, fashioning an album that is easily the most topical work of the band's career.
Slow Motion Daydream is the sixth CD by the Portland, Ore.-based band, which formed in 1991, and songs like "I Want To Die A Beautiful Death," "How To Win Friends And Influence People" and "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" all fit firmly within Everclear's signature blend of surging hard rock sweetened by catchy pop melodies.

The Badger Herald - Everclear in search of a brand new day on Slow Motion Daydream
Alexakis made millions from reconstructing similar harmonies in neatly refurbished packages, and in the lead single from Slow Motion Daydream, he’s chastising adult-film stars for moving out to the suburbs.
While the albums were polar opposites in terms of their tonality, the melodies were similar to past tracks and signs of fatigue were evident in tracks that were, well, bland.
Slow Motion Daydream certainly has its bright spots, but one wonders how long Everclear can last without evolving.

Much better vocals that fit the violins and smooth slow feel of the track.
The use of violins throughout the album, the most noticeable new element of the band, helps the songs they’re featured in by boosting the sound and rounding it out.
Albeit the band has come a long way from its neo-grunge beginnings in Portland, but all in all this album contains about 4 or 5 great songs and about 2 or 3 really, really bad ones, with the rest falling into the recycled lyrics and music category.

In Music We Trust - Everclear: Slow Motion Daydream
Alexakis promised fans that Slow Motion Daydream would be the album that best represents what Everclear is all about (much like he said prior to So Much For The Afterglow's release).
Another new thing to Slow Motion Daydream is Alexakis' approach to lyrics.
SMD combines lush orchestration, tender piano notes dropped into heavy songs, acoustic guitars fleshed out with bells and whistles, and loud guitars blaring as Alexakis yells over them, returning to the rock.

 Ink 19 :: Everclear
Everclear's latest disc Slow Motion Daydream (the sixth offering from the Oregon trio) sounds like much of their previous work.
It's no secret that the forty-year-old has gone through some tough times (growing up a white kid in the projects with a single mom who had no money and struggling with a bad drug problem a few years back), but all of that is in the past and Alexakis apparently leads a well-adjusted life.
With Slow Motion Daydream, the band's motivating force continues his Americana commentary with such songs like the lead single "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" (about an ex-bad girl turned good housewife) and "Blackjack" (a song about scary John Ashcroft), but that commentary, boasted as "emotionally complex" by the press release, is anything but.

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: Slow Motion Daydream, Everclear, CD, Enhanced
Long before reality TV took root in the public consciousness, Art Alexakis staked out a claim as rock's ultimate survivor, veining wrenching songs with tales of abuse, both self-inflicted and external, and managing to crack the odd wry grin when the cosmos least expected it.
Alexakis took a pretty big chance by putting Everclear on a fairly lengthy hiatus that saw him pump out a pair of divergent solo discs, but Slow Motion Daydream indicates that the singer left a breadcrumb trail to lead him back to the pop-punk mother lode.
Even when moving in slow motion, Everclear packs a punch.

I make no qualms about the fact that I used to be a big Everclear fan.
This was a two-parter release that could have just been one well-produced album that left very little happiness in my soul for the livelihood of a band that could have done a lot better with not even half as much talent as they seem to have.
Now, with Slow Motion Daydream, I'm left wondering if these guys have even been listening to the last three albums they released.

To say Slow Motion Daydream sounds good would be an understatement.
Even including soothing, soft sentiment, as Art does with the song “Chrysanthemum,” seems to fit well into Everclear’s “Daydream.” The song, placed perfectly in the middle of the rest of the tracks, seems to serve as an intermission from the hard rock ballads that fill the album.
With Slow Motion Daydream, Everclear--Art Alexakis (vocals/guitar), Craig Montoya (bass/vocals), and Greg Eklund (drums, vocals)--present to the world a solid rock album loaded with chunky guitar riffs, catchy hooks and sweet sounding harmonies.

Two and a half years later, Alexakis and crew obviously haven't learned much from the experience - except maybe that splitting up their rock leanings and pop forays into separate albums wasn't such a good idea after all.
In fact, on Slow Motion Daydream they tend to mix the two more often than before...
But if you instead realize that good bands usually don't go out with a bang, you're likely realize the more truthful side of Slow Motion Daydream - Everclear's star is fading and they're likely to be the band who just kind of goes away.

The thing is, the band didn't get worse between those two records; if anything, they were more effective than ever in tying their hard rock and ambitious pop leanings together on Learning How to Smile, while Alexakis' songwriting remained sturdy and tuneful.
At its best, the album illustrates that Alexakis is a very good rock songwriter and his songs sound the best with just a little bit of pop gloss.

On 'Slow Motion Daydream' you don't get anything as biting as 'When It All Goes Wrong Again' nor anything as sweet as 'Otis Redding' - it feels like a somewhat unhappy compromise between the two albums - certainly not a return to their earlier sound - this is a commercial album.
Everclear still has all the energy and passion, and although Slow Motion Daydream (collectively) isn't the best they've done, the spark is still there and it's inspiring.
If you must draw a comparison to some of their past albums, this one can best be described as a mix of World of Noise and Songs From An American Movie Part II, it's heavier than most of them, still some of the best Punk this year.

Almost as an added bonus, songs like "Blackjack" and "I Want to Die a Beautiful Death" hark back to the Everclear of four albums ago, fusing gritty, subversive garage rock with Alexakis' current, studio-savvy style.
"Daydream" is just as thematically cohesive as the "American Movie" discs, and it's armed to the teeth with songs about getting away from it all.
The bright tones and high energy of "Slow Motion Daydream" show that the Everclear formula is still holding up nicely.

And if the return to aggressive, guitar-driven angst characterized by Volume II left any lingering doubts about his commitment to Everclear after the broadened musical vistas of the "solo" Volume I, well, the new Slow Motion Daydream (out this Tuesday on Capitol) should allay those concerns.
The disc finds Alexakis and mates (drummer Greg Eklund and bassist Craig Montoya) retrenching in the kind of hard-edged, hook-laden modern rock that propelled Everclear from a basement recording studio in Portland, Oregon, to the national stage in post-Nevermind 1995 with the release of Sparkle and Fade, the trio’s proper Capitol debut.
As far as Alexakis is concerned, however, change of some sort remains imminent.
