MATCH - LoveToKnow Article on MATCH
The first attempt to make matches in the modern sense may probably be ascribed to Godfrey Haukwitz, who, in 1680, acting under the direction of Robert Boyle, who at that time had just discovered how to prepare phosphorus, employed small pieces of that element, ignited by friction, to light splints of -wood dipped in sulphur.

DObereiner of Jena.
At the same time also matches were being made by F. Moldenhauer in Darmstadt; and for a long series of years Austria and the South-German states were the principal centres of the new industry.

Slow match - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slow match or match cord is another term for the slow-burning fuse used by early gunpowder armies to ignite matchlock muskets.
The match attached to the lock of the matchlock gun was usually a length of hemp cord that had been chemically treated to make it burn slowly (approximately 200mm per hour) and consistently for an extended period of time.
The main chemical used was potassium nitrate, although lead acetate also appears to have been used.

Selective Innervation of Fast and Slow Muscle Regions during Early Chick Neuromuscular Development -- Rafuse et al. 16 ...
Consistent with the EMG activation patterns, the slow region of the experimental IFIB muscles was predominantly innervated by motoneuron pools located in LS1 and LS2, whereas the fast region tended to be innervated by motoneurons from LS2 and LS3 (Table 2), which agrees with the FT activation patterns recorded from that region.
A, In the slow region of the IFIB, the intramuscular nerve trunks grow parallel to the myotubes and intermittently extend short collateral sprouts (arrowhead), whereas the nerve trunk projecting to the fast region (indicated by bracket) is transversely oriented to the fibers and undergoes reductive branching (arrow).
Because selective innervation of fast and slow muscle regions was found early in the motoneuron cell death period, death of inappropriately matched motoneurons cannot account for the selectivity of innervation observed.
