Alcor on-Line Help: Introduction to Usenet News and the slrn Newsreader
When you run slrn for the first time, it has no idea of which newsgroups you are interested in, so it presents you either with only a few newsgroups which your news administrator has deemed of interest to new users, or in some cases, with all the newsgroups which your system receives.
Slrn prepares the reply and allows you to edit it, just as if you were posting a followup article, but e-mails it to the author instead of posting it to Usenet.
Slrn allows you to post an article to a moderated group in exactly the same way as to an unmoderated group, except that the news server mails your article to the moderator instead of placing it directly in the newsgroup.

 The slrn newsreader / Home
The original author of slrn is John E. Davis; since version 0.9.7.0, the program is maintained by Thomas Schultz, with the help of a great number of people who make contributions.
I decided to make one more release before the upcoming transition to slang-2, so here it is. Compared to 0.9.8.0, it mainly offers a bunch of bug fixes, but also gives a (minor, but convenient) bit of new functionality (see list of changes).
Thomas Schultz is the new maintainer of slrn; he also does the layout of the website and provides content.

 Slrn news client tutorial
Slrn is a news reader for the UNIX environment.
To post a new message of your own, type 'P' (a capital 'P'.) slrn will prompt you for the newsgroup you want to post to (just hit the return key for now), the subject of the post (put whatever you like, but make sure that it isn't blank.
slrn doesn't allow a blank subject line.) slrn will then bring you to an editor where you can edit your message.

Slrn uses a configure script which should enable it to be compiled on most Linux systems.
The sample.slrnrc file included with the program has an if/then statement which causes Slrn to read the local active file when run in spool mode, while keeping Slrn in standard mode from retrieving the bulky remote active file each time a connection is made.
Slrnpull is also effective for obtaining a quick idea of the the flavor and tone of a group: just tell it to suck down the most recent twenty messages in the group, and see what you think.

The editor slrn will use for composing articles can be configured by either setting the EDITOR environment variable or by configuring the editor_command variable in the slrn.rc file.
If you want slrn to use a different editor from the one you have already set the EDITOR variable to, or if you want slrn's editor to automatically position the cursor in the article body, you will need to add a line to your global slrn.rc.

In these cases, it should be set to the current directory at the time slrn is invoked.

SLRN can be readily extended using SLANG scripts, and its own C-based source code is "clean" enough that many customizations can be readily added at that level too.
The news spool would of course need to be modified so as to have slrn access the ifiltered folders as a news spool.
There needs to be a quick and dirty interface that allows the user to tag a bunch of articles and refile them to another newsgroup (thus updating the dictionary of statistics).

Immunix: 'slrn' buffer overflow - The Community's Center for Security
This buffer is created on the heap, so it is not protected from overflows by the StackGuard compiler (more information detailing the overflows that StackGuard does protect against can be found at http://immunix.org/stackguard.html) This overflow can occur by creating a very long header in a news message.
Some messages that can cause the slrn news reader to crash have been detected in the wild, but no exploits are currently known at this time.
Immunix 7.0 does not install the slrn packages by default but provides them in the extras/unsupported directory so they do not need to be upgraded unless they have been installed manually by the system administrator.
