Slug (mass) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The slug is an English and U.S. customary unit of mass.
The slug is part of a subset of coherent units known as the gravitational foot-pound-second system, one of several such specialized systems of mechanical units.
Because 1 kgf = 9.806 65 N, the metric slug is 9.806 65 kg.

Other slugs are found on land, but their soft, slimy bodies are prone to dessication, so they are confined to moist environments.
Commercial slug pellets containing metaldehyde or methiocarb are available, but are not approved for organic gardening as they can poison creatures further up the food chain.
A slightly different from the last definition is the slug that is a bullet that has been reduced in diameter, or has become deformed, by passing from a larger to a smaller part of the bore of the barrel.

These are units of flow rate for gases, and the term "standard" indicates that the flow rate assumes a standard temperature and a standard pressure of 1 atmosphere.
This unit was originally called the bit [2], because when the message is a bit string and all strings are equally likely, then the information content turns out to equal the number of bits.
In SI units this is equal to exactly 37 becquerels per kilogram (Bq/kg), that is, 37 atomic disintegrations per kilogram per second.

slug   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
One slug is a mass such that a 1-pound force acting on it will produce an acceleration of 1 foot per second per second.
This unit, rather than the pound (as a unit of mass), is used as the system's unit of mass in order to make the system coherent.
The slug was never used much outside of textbooks, which in one respect was unfortunate because using either it or the poundal would have helped to dispel the confusion between the pound as mass and the pound as force.

 Union Pacific Yard Slugs
Slugs have been converted by the railroads for a variety of types of service, including flat switching, hump yard switching, and to enhance the tractive effort in low speed road service.
The initial assignment of the 446/S5 ten-motor slug set to Los Angeles upon its completion in March 1976 allowed the reassignment of road units back to their intended service, such as GP30 720 which was on the LA hump, with SD24 415 in September 1975.
The railroad found that a ten-motor slug could not directly replace two road units coupled back to back, and that the higher horsepower of two powered units was needed after all, contrary to the initial thinking that what was needed was the tractive effort from the extra axles.

Railway Age: A potent combination: tests conducted by Genessee & Wyoming show that a mother/slug locomotive set can be ...
The mother unit (the powered locomotive) has some additional hardware to allow for transfer of elcctrical power to the slug, which has no engine.
The slug has to be bal-lasted to compensate for the weight loss resulting from removal of its engine and components until its gross weight is brought back to near its original as-built weight.
Because only the mother unit is providing all the power for two locomotives, its main alternator must provide maximum electrical energy right up to the point of its output limit.

 Trains.com - When to use a slug (SW calf's)?
I would think that, the coal loads being so heavy, it would make sense to have the extra horsepower of a slug unit, even if in prototype operations it meant only hauling a few strings of cars at a time until a full train could be built at the interchange siding.
As long as the engine generating the power is not running flat out to service itself it should be able to power the slug (which by the way is different from a calf since that had a prime mover and was remotely operated from the unit with the cab like a modern lash up).
But if calfs were MU units under their own power *unlike the slugs you described* then I would guess that would suit my purposes as well.

The pound-mass as the culprit for unit conversion confusion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A pound-mass is defined as the amount of mass that “weighs one pound or pound-force.” However, that amount of mass is 1/g times the slug, or (1/32.17) of a slug.
We must realize that weight is a force that is described by such units as the Newton and the pound (pound-force), and that mass is described by kilogram and slug.
Whereas, the pound implied as a unit of mass or directly as pound-mass, the student should refer to the above three statements that advocate the total discard of the pound-mass.

Okay, disregarding the unit of measurement (pounds, dollars, yen, whatnot) take a slug of given size and produce fractional monetary values by producing wedges of a size proportional to the value of the wedge.
So a half dollar/pound/whatnot is half a circle, a quarter unit is a quarter circle, etc. Very pieces of eight and all that.
Individual values are easy to determine for the sightless and slugs of different diameter or thickness can be used for different base values ($1 slug, $10 slug, $100 slug, etc).
