Slug barrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A slug barrel is a barrel for a shotgun that is designed primarily to fire slugs.
When slugs are fired in a standard, choked barrel, the slug is deformed by the choke as it exits.
The first slug barrels were cylinder bore barrels (no choke) outfitted with rifle sights, which are far better suited to accurate shooting of still targets than the standard bead sight used for shooting small, moving targets with shotshells.

Mounting device for sight viewing apparatus - Patent 5046277
The mounting device of claim 8 further comprising, in combination: a recess formed in the bottom surface and intersecting with the dovetail groove, with the bolt located in the recess, with the recess being of a size and shape complementary to and for straddling the apparatus requiring sighting or aiming adjacent to the sight ramp.
Slug barrel ramps 162 are dove tail shaped and integrally formed on the slug barrel and extending at an angle therefrom.
In use, device 160 is attached to the slug barrel by sliding groove 184 down ramp 162 until recess 164 straddles the shotgun barrel.

Additionally, some slugs are so slow that with a longer barrel the shooter would be flinching from recoil before the slug has exited the barrel, thus causing operator induced inaccuracy.
Barrels with a screw-in rifled choke tube can also benefit from using sabot slugs but not to the extent that a fully rifled barrel will.
Hunters using a smooth bore barrel will be best served by conventional (Foster style) slugs, sometimes referred to as “rifled slugs.” Firing a rifled slug through a rifled barrel will result in the rifling of the barrel and the rifling on the slug working against each other.

Are You Using the Right Slug for Your Shotgun?
The answer as to why they are shorter than regular smooth barrels for other types of hunting is that the amount of rifling in the 18-20 inches of barrel is at its maximum potential in aiding the slug for accuracy.
Once all the powder is burned and the slug reaches terminal velocity (and the rifling has imparted spin to the slug), the barrel's job is done.
Slugs are a wonderful and ethical tool to use in hunting deer in places where rifles are not allowed.

Dave McCracken, others, your opinions please for 870 slug barrel - THR
Most slug barrels are in the 21" range, so the ammo is loaded to get most if not all of its velocity in that length.
Sabot slugs are expensive, and several different brands/types and lengths need to be tested out of your barrel to find what is suitable for your needs.
I realize that FORSTER type slugs can be fired from a rifled barrel, but I certainly wouldn't suggest it because in my limited experience, (Mossy 9200 w/ fully rifled barrel) barrel leading gets severe with just a few round fired, accuracy deteriorates and cleaning the barrel becomes a chore.

Using the enclose forceps, remove the smallest diameter slug from the tray and liberally grease the slug with the enclosed slug lubricant.
At this point the slug is forming to the diameter of the bore and this is where the distortion of the driven side of the slug occurs.
If the slug is Perfectly Engraved and clearly marked by both the lands and grooves, then measure the slug at it’s widest point using a micrometer or caliper to determine the groove diameter of this barrel.

The 410 slug   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
A fixed cylinder bore allows the slug to expand to bore diameter in the forcing cone and then exit the barrel with no changes to the slugs size or contact patch with the barrel through the entire trip down the barrel.
Many manufactures make their slugs significantly under size to ensure that their slug passes through a tight choke with the least likelihood of overstressing even the thinnest and oldest of shotgun barrels.
A slug that is already close to or even just slightly larger than bore diameter will give the least distortion as the slug expands to bore diameter and thus add to the accuracy.

I know guys who use the rifled slugs in them and just clean up the mess, but I just have to think there would be some accuracy issue with the twist rate, tewist dierection, or just plain tearing up of the outside of the slugs with two different rifleing trying to steer the same projectile.
Rifled slugs are probably the most dangerous type of ammunition to use in a wooded area crowded with hunters, as they plow through visually impenetrable brush, leaves, and small tree limbs with aplomb.
The pathetic.410 rifled slug is generally inferior in both projectile weight and terminal performance to the lowly.380 ACP pistol cartridge--often despairingly referred to as a "mouse gun." The less said about these sub-12 gauge rifled slugs the better.

Slug Guns for Deer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Whatever the reason for looking at slug guns in the first place, hunters soon realize that the range and accuracy of today's slug guns, sights and ammunition is phenomenal, particularly when compared to the "pumpkin balls" and bead sights of old.
Traditional slugs, also known as Foster-style slugs, were designed for smoothbore shotguns, which allow the skirt of a lead projectile to contact the barrel.
Later, rifled slugs were developed that were somewhat more accurate, but it wasn't until sabot ammunition was introduced that slug hunting became a serious concept for many deer hunters.

Regular sabot slugs tend to distort a little after the ride down the smooth bore and slamming into the rifling in the choke tube, but they still shoot better from a screw on rifled tube than a smooth bore.
Do not try using the foster slugs meant for smooth bores with a rifled barrel or rifled choke tube, as leading will be a problem and accuracy won’t be as good as it should be.
