On-base plus slugging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On-base plus slugging, or OPS, is a baseball statistic which is calculated as the sum of a player's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
One fault of OPS is that it weights on-base average and slugging percentage equally, although on-base average correlates better with scoring runs.
Discrepancies between published OPSes and the sum of on-base average and slugging percentage are due to rounding errors.

Comments and Critique by Casie Britton
Slugging percentage is not a good way to determine the number of runs produced by a hitter.
Slugging percentage would, quite possibly, need to be higher to account for the same number of runs as on base percentage since simply because slugging percentage is rather high does not necessarily mean that the player is on base often.
Sluggin percentage is probably not a very accurate way of determining how many runs are produced since that will depend greatly on the number of other players on base for each of the hits accounted for in determining slugging percentage.

Like on-base percentage, slugging percentage — total bases divided by at-bats, or the average number of bases a hitter racks up each at-bat —; is a better measure of somebody's ability to create runs than dowdy batting average is.
Slugging percentage is also far superior to runs batted in, which dress up mediocre hitters in good lineups to look like stars.
For now, on-base and slugging percentages are far easier to find on the Internet than in newspapers or on scoreboards.
