Domingo and Washington Opera to tour Japan
WASHINGTON, June 29 (UPI) -- International tenor Placido Domingo will lead the Washington Opera on a 12-day tour of Japan with a repertory of three of the company's best productions -- Verdi's Otello and Tosca, and Ermanno Wolf Ferrari's Sly.
Washington critics credit Domingo with transforming the Washington Opera into one of the country's leading opera companies.
Twenty sea containers of scenery, props, costumes, and trunkloads of musical scores of each opera for the members of the orchestra are already en route to Japan.

 Knight Music
It's been a slow process, but his many operas, long considered musty and unstageable relics of the past, are once again hit shows everywhere.
Italian opera was all the rage, Handel had just turned 26, and Aaron Hill, who prepared the scenario from Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata, was only 24 -- no wonder the piece bursts with such youthful vitality and creative energy.
Anyone under 30 who sees the City Opera's delicious new production of Rinaldo is likely to wonder why older generations ever had a problem with Handel.

The hotel room bit and Groucho's crowded cabin room bit are highlights in a movie where every piece is as good as the next.
Groucho's one liners are probably the best comic lines on film, and Harpo's silent antics are a delight, while Chico is up to his same old tricks.

In the story, Sly suffers a practical joke: he is made to believe he is an aristocrat suffering from amnesia rather than a poor poet.

"A Night at the Opera" is probably slightly less funny than "Duck Soup" (it is no criticism to say that of any film), but it has more of a story to connect the great comic bits.

No problems with understanding Mozart in Italian: Garden Opera's Don Giovanni is sung in a compacter version in Amanda Holden's sharp, sly translation.
The new venue's website is www.visitconkers.com and, says Lucy de Castro, 'They have done very well to regenerate a huge area that had become rather sadly neglected.' Garden Opera appeared as part of a small festival, which featured a tribute band and other suitably cheerful entertainments.

On that panel, Hunter will be joined by Andre Previn, composer of the opera; its director, David Kneiss, a CMU directing grad who is executive stage director for the Metropolitan Opera; and Milan Stitt, playwright and head of the CMU play writing program.
As a Pittsburgh theater-goer, you should have a third: In 1992, Hunter, now 77, was at the Public Theater, playing the patrician mother in A.R. Gurney's "The Cocktail Party" -- very WASP, but with a sly sweetness that kept peeking out from the crisp matron of the play.
In pursuing the transformations of "Streetcar Named Desire" from play to film to opera, CMU's Peter Frisch has put together a variety of film clips, live scenes by CMU actors and a panel.

Guardian Britten: Albert Herring; Gilchrist, Hickox et al
Albert Herring was the second of Britten's chamber operas.
In Herring it is the whole confection that makes it the epitome of parochial English opera: limited in its horizons, narrow in its emotional range.
Of course, the score is full of musical craftsmanship on the highest level, and of course, Eric Crozier's libretto is a wonderfully skilful piece of work, stuffed with literary allusions and sly humour: it artfully transposes the original Guy de Maupassant short story from Normandy to a fictitious Suffolk village in the early 1900s.

Mozart's "The Magic Flute": Papageno as parody of Salieri
This interpretation is in accordance to the Papageno's characteristics in the opera.
Salieri at this year of 1791, fits the image of Papageno the composer of "hunting music" almost perfectly, as his opera "La cifra" includes a hunting scene for the nobles entertainment complete with imitation of hunters' horn as a musical hunting tool (like is Papageno panpipes).
According to it, Papageno is a sly hunter, using music to imitate the voice of birds in order to deceive them and thus catch them.

 Met, Sly previews
That opera, however -- famously given its premiere simultaneously in six cities -- was a huge flop, while Le Donne Curiose, Wolf-Ferrari's opera based on the play by Goldoni, scored a major success at its opening night two years later, in German, at Munich's Residenz Theater.
The operas of Wolf-Ferrari were favorites of the great stars of his generation, including Aureliano Pertile, who created Sly at La Scala in 1927, and Geraldine Farrar, Rosaura in the Met's Le Donne Curiose premiere in 1912.
All four scores utilize a variety of classical forms, and their expressive content, although always appealingly attractive and derived from a rich lode of engaging melodies, is positively Spartan in its precision and economy of means.

Los Angeles Philharmonic Association - Piece Detail
Candide is also, technically, an operetta, leaning more toward the classical forms of opera than the more relaxed methods of musical theater; the format suits Voltaire’s characters perfectly, their fancies and foibles supported by Bernstein’s alternately catty and melodramatic score.
Both are based upon classic literature (Candide upon Voltaire’s work of the same name, West Side Story upon Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet), but they approach their subjects in strikingly different ways: Candide struts along in the same sly manner as Voltaire’s satire, while West Side Story pulls out the full register of romantic stops.
John Corigliano’s setting for violin and orchestra begins by echoing the dizzying circumstances leading up to that point; the operetta’s main theme (from which is derived this closing song) appears in a whimsical burlesque before evaporating into the more peaceful opening from the original score.
