Smailholm Tower stands on a rock on three sides, with a ditch on the fourth side.
The entrance of the tower, which lies on one of the cliffside faces of the tall tower, leads to a vaulted basement with a turnpike stair in one corner.
The tower was the property of the Pringle family in 1408.

 Smailholm Tower
Smailholm Tower stands on a prominent ridge near the Roxburgh town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders.
Smailholm was originally a Pringle stronghold and often attacked by English raiders, but later became the property of Robert Scott, Sir Walter’s grandfather, who also owned the adjacent farmhouse of Sandyknowe in 1774.
The tower was a prominent landmark for ships approaching the town of Berwick, 25 miles away, and there is a recess on the top of the tower for the lookout’s lantern.

The tower is said to have been used as a landmark by ships going in to Berwick, 25 miles away.

It was this Robert Pringle who built the tower of Smailholm, a large square building, now entirely ruinous, and originally a border keep, situated among a cluster of rocks on an eminence in the farm of Sandy-knowe.
The eldest son, David Pringle of Smailholm, was, after the forfeiture of the Douglases, as we learn from the Exchequer Rolls of 1456, appointed cursor or ranger of the ward of Tweed, an office, held also by his son and grandson.
This John Pringle of Smailholm and Galashiels fought at Pinkie in 1547, and afterwards, with George Pringle of Torwoodlee and William Pringle of Wolfhousebyre, was surety to the English for 100 gold nobles, the ransom of Hugh Rose of Kilravock, taken in that battle.

This is a well preserved and well restored border tower house dating from the 15th century.
Formerly the home of the Pringles of Smailholm and later that of the Scotts of Harden, it was well known to Sir Walter Scott who came to Sandyknowe regularly to visit his grandfather.
The tower was surrounded by a barmkin wall, which enclosed the outhouses, chapel and kitchen.

What remains visible today is the plain tower itself, growing directly from the bare rock, part of the Barmkin, or defensive stone wall and the foundations of stone buildings inside the courtyard.
The Smailholm estate was sold in 1645, due to insolvency after Sir James Pringle's death in 1635 and was bought by Sir William Scott of Harden, already related to the Pringles through marriage.
Not only was it a place of freedom and clean air, but the ruined Tower of his ancestors, together with the Scottish Ballads and songs told to him by his Aunt Janet, engendered an affectionate interest in his country's literary past, leading eventually to his own phenomenal success as an author.

The farm of Sandyknowe, in the parish of Smailholm, was the property of the paternal grandfather of Sir Walter Scott, and the scene of many of the musings of his precocious boyhood.
Both landowners and tenants had to pay this tax and are therefore recorded in the records which were kept at the time.
A transcript of the hearth tax records for Smailholm parish (NAS reference E69/21/1) is included with the list of monumental inscriptions published by the Borders Family History Society.
