Small Brown Bike take their brand of powerful, emotional hardcore against Cursive and their own unique style of post-hardcore rock.
Small Brown Bike is one of those rare bands that can tug at the heartstrings while three guys are yelling at the top of their lungs.
With Dead Reckoning, Small Brown Bike managed to make one of those cool records where yelling along with the lyrics at the top of your lungs with tears in your eyes is damned near a requirement for listening at some point in time.

Small Brown Bike: The River Bed: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Despite a mid-career slump, Marshall, Michigan's Small Brown Bike emerge on their third full-length with a chunk of dense, melodic post-hardcore.
The album opens with "Deconstruct/Rebuilt", a claustrophobic scribble on citywide alienation; like the best Small Brown Bike, its tone remains triumphant despite the dour positioning of lyrics like, "So I stare outside the window and I wish I was alive," which could only be a late-summer battle cry for unshaven urban hermits.
With bands like Small Brown Bike who excel at contrasts, pummeling their instruments and finding a path towards melody through splintering volume and sludgy hiss, such arty detours ineluctably sabotage their strengths.

Small Brown Bike: Dead Reckoning Aversion.com Review
With all the clean-cut pop emo bands that work the scene these days, it’s tempting to get sentimental and pine away for the days when hard-hitting emocore was just as common as pop hooks in the scene that embraced loneliness as a badge of honor.
Small Brown Bike doesn’t ever do anything that’s patently annoying: Its angular, jagged guitar figures and visceral power are dead-on models of its influences’ sound, but the act never emerges as anything more than just another genre-chasing bunch of yahoos.
While Small Brown Bike really, really, really wants to be depressed and wallow in self-pity — emotional sacrifice is a badge of honor in the genre, after all — it doesn’t have the ammunition to back its claims of grief.

Splendid Magazine reviews Small Brown Bike & the Casket Lottery: Split
In what seems to be a burgeoning trend, this split release from recurrent favorites Small Brown Bike and the Casket Lottery is actually a collaborative effort as opposed to an epic spy vs. spy showdown.
In reality, though, the split is more an exercise in pseudo-collaboration (tapes mailed back and forth as opposed to logging actual studio time together) than true tag-teamwork.
Larynxes are put to the test and guitars whittle and spit venomously throughout SBB's "Now I'm a Shadow", while the gnarled bass figure and metallisheen guitars of "Composing Myself (a lullaby)" are vintage Casket Lottery down to the very last note.

Small Brown Bike: The River Bed Aversion.com Review
Small Brown Bike offers a more reasonable take on the state of punk sub-genres by making a record that holds no allegiances.
In some ways, The River Bed is an organic evolution, an album that compiles the story of the last decade for a lot of punks who love sounds, no matter what label they’re given.
Even though Small Brown Bike’s work outside the grid makes it interesting, it also falls into pits of predictability because of its lack of boundaries.

Part Hot Water Music, part Choke, part Jawbreaker, and a heap of a lot of their own originality, the sound of Small Brown Bike is one that just grooves me in a charming kind of way.
And as unique as their melodies are, the lyricism on ‘Dead Reckoning’ is nothing short of brilliant; like snippets from the journal of the “awe fuck it” generation.
While Small Brown Bike may incorporate the verse chorus verse approach, these are most certainly some of the most original structures around.
