The buttonquails or Hemipodes are a small family of birds which resemble, but are unrelated to, the true quails.
The buttonquails are traditionally placed in the crane or pheasant orders, but the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy elevates them to a new order Turniciformes.
These are small drab running birds, which avoid flying.

The buttonquails or hemipodes are a small family of birds (15 species) which closely resemble true quails, but are unrelated to them.
Buttonquail, traditionally placed in Gruiformes, are distant relatives of rails and crakes.
They only have 3 toes and are lacking a hind toe (hence the name hemipode which means "half a foot." The females are larger, brighter, more colorful of the two sexes, and initiate courtship.

A half-hour drive to Kampi then a small boat hired for $5 to go out to the dolphin pool and the small islands in the channel where the Mekong Wagtail is to be found.
