Discworld gods - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gods are everywhere on the Disc, a crucial element of the world's peculiar ecology that gives power to belief and demands resolution to any and all narratives.
Small gods are a special classification of deity unique to the Discworld, but with analogues in our world, particularly the Graeco-Roman concept of numina.
A household god on the Discworld is a small god that has a limited number of committed believers, perhaps only one, but nonetheless enough to manifest in a specific visible form.

Small Gods - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Small Gods is a novel by Terry Pratchett, the thirteenth part of the popular Discworld series.
Pratchett tells the origin of the god Om, and his relations with his prophet, the reformer Brutha; in the process Pratchett satirises religion, religious people and practices, and the role of religion in political life.
It is worth noting, however, that in Carpe Jugulum, a discussion between Omnian priest Mightily Oats and the witch Granny Weatherwax suggests that the events took place several generations ago.

Fiction: Little Gods, by Tim Pratt, illustration by Mark Precious
I don't know if the boy means to do it or if it happens by accident but the gun goes off with a crack and a stink (small god of lead, small god of expanding gases) and Emily goes down, goes over, tumbles into the candy display and it falls down with her.
The small gods follow, jumping after her, whooping and singing and laughing, and I find myself still smiling as they, too, turn to light.
I sit, watching, until her brightness merges with the sparkles on the surface of the water, and then I walk away, mouthing a prayer of thanks to the small gods of waking up in the morning, the small gods of drawing breath, the small gods of holding on.

Small gods are quite frequent, and many trees and pools of water embody the essence of the divine.
Small gods of water, particularly those of springs, typically demand a sacrifice before their water can be taken.
Those that do favors for animal gods may be marked with a sign, typically a small picture of the animal or the footprint thereof, and may never be molested by animals of that type (help the rat god, never have rats attack you again).

In the case where the small god is viewed as a saint by other religions, his clergy is probably very small and underpowered, with the High Priest and perhaps 2 or 3 others being his only clerics, and the rest are adepts.
The powers of clerics of Small Gods IMO should be lesser than the power of clerics of greater gods, except maybe in the area directly around the gods' abode.

Small Gods is one of those books where you are not sure whether Terry Pratchett is joking.
Perhaps not all gods speak from a burning bush, this one has taken the form of a turtle, and his only true believer is very skeptical when called on to be his new Prophet.
Until Small Gods I thought Pratchett was simply hilarious, this shows that he is brilliant.

Small Gods is one of those TP books which stands alone.
The head of the religion is Vorbis, a not-very-nice man, he is not the top priest or anything, he is just the one who is really in charge, he does not have to bother with all the surface stuff, he can just get on with the nitty-gritty behind the scenes stuff.
The characters in Small Gods are great, philosophers, priests and people living at the top of poles, it makes you think, truly it does, about what I do not know, but it does make you think..

Small Gods has the rare distinction of being one of only a couple of Discworld books whcih stand on their own (as well as on the backs of four elephants which may, or may not, stand on the back of a giant turtle which may, or may not, move through space).
Terry Pratchett uses Small Gods to tackle the topic of religion and intolerance, electing to focus on the country of Omnia, where the Great God Om is worshipped.
Small Gods may not be the most laugh-out-loud funny of the Discworld novels, but it is the most philosophical book in the series.

In the land of the Great God Om, which certainly bears no resemblance whatsoever to any contemporary church or religion, an acolyte named Brutha with no higher ambitions in life than tending his melon patch is unexpectedly visited by his god - in a most unexpected form.
This is no small feat in a satire, but Pratchett knows exactly when to be light and when to be serious, and there were some scenes that I found outright haunting (the encounter in the desert with the ghost of a long-dead god comes to mind).

Remember that you are not expanding randomly, you are aiming for the happiness limit for Republic - as I stated earlier, eight cities on a small or normal map, and 10 on a large one.
Sometimes on a small map you will not be able to reach this limit, but that's OK - make sure you get at least 6 cities, though.
It may be worth a small digression in your guide to note that if you exceed the happy-cities number by a lot, as in ICS, and begin to get outraged citizens, it's actually HELPFUL.

The story opens in the city of Omnia, whose chief god, Om, has been reduced to a pitiful existence in the form of a turtle because, despite an enormous organized religion centered around his worship, no one really believes in him any more.
Gods need belief to live and to thrive (a theme also addressed by Neil Gaiman in American Gods), and young Brutha's belief is just enough to sustain Om, who's desperate to avoid becoming one of the small gods, barely existing out in the desert wastelands with no believers at all.
