Claims to recover money for breach of a written promise to pay must be filed within ten years from the date of the breach of the written promise.
If the court, in its discretion, decides that you are only suing in order to harass the defendant, your case may be dismissed, your court costs forfeited, and your access to the small claims courts barred for up to one year.
The court notifies the defendant of the suit by certified mail, and the address is also important for you in determining the proper court in which to file your claim.

Small claims court is for all claims for money or the recovery of personal property valued at under $750.
Small claims court also can be used for the same kinds of claims valued at from $750 to $5000 by people who do not want to use a lawyer and who want to get their case heard relatively quickly.

 Small Claims Court in Vermont: How to use it
Small claims court is not the proper court in which you seek to evict a tenant, have personal property returned to you due to lack of payment or any other claim in which you, as plaintiff, seek anything more than money damages.
Small claims court is a special part of the Vermont Superior Court, and you are required to sue in the court in the county where you reside or the county where the defendant resides.
Either party in a small claims case may appeal to the clerk of the superior court by filing a notice of appeal on a form provided by the court, together with the filing fee of $75.00 within 30 days from the entry of the judgment.

 Small Claims Court Procedures
The small claims court has jurisdiction over civil cases in which the plaintiff is seeking a money judgment up to $2,000 or recovery of personal property valued up to $2,000.
The papers will be returned to court with the deputy sheriff's or private process server's written statement that the defendant was "not found" (that he or she was unable to serve the papers on the defendant).
The plaintiff must certify to the court that at least ten days before the entry of default judgment, the plaintiff mailed to the defendant at his or her residence, by ordinary first-class mail, a copy of the civil warrant.
