BASIC programming language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally devised as an easy-to-use programming language, it became widespread on home microcomputers in the 1980s, and remains popular to this day in a handful of heavily evolved dialects.
Programming languages of the era tended to be designed, like the machines on which they ran, for specific purposes (such as scientific formula processing or text editing).
The original BASIC language was invented in 1963 by John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz and implemented by a team of Dartmouth students under their direction.

Programming languages of the era tended to be designed, like the machines on which they ran, for specific purposes such as scientific formula processing.
The original BASIC language was invented in 1964 by John Kemeny (1926–93) and Thomas Kurtz (1928–) at Dartmouth College and implemented by a team of Dartmouth students under their direction.
This applies as well to other "old" computer languages like COBOL and FORTRAN, although the BASIC movement is by far the largest; this may be explained by the large number of IT professionals who cut their teeth on BASIC programming during the home computer era in the 1980s.

SmallBASIC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SmallBASIC (SB) is a free software (GPL2) BASIC dialect with interpreters for Linux, DOS, Win32, VTOS, EBM, and Palm OS.
SmallBASIC was not designed to be an application development environment, but was instead designed to be a simple, lightweight environment for experimentation.
The strong mathematical support and inclusion of high level graphics commands like "chart" (which draws an automatically scaled and labeled graph of an array) make it ideal for tasks that are too complex for a desk calculator, but don't require a full math package like Mathematica.

Smallbasic is a simple computer language, featuring a clean interface, strong mathematics and graphics.
At the beginning Smallbasic had to be a simple programming language for PalmOS, later on it has been improved adding libraries for Windows, Linux, DOS, VTOS and some other platforms, but above all it remains a language for PalmOS.
SmallBasic was first created by Nicholas Christopoulos in 2000, to be used as an advanced calculator for Palm IIIx handheld devices, but it has later ported to several OSs.

Program source "files" are identified by Memo Pad category and/or by special memo naming conventions.
SmallBASIC echos the feel of 1986--it refers to "files" and VGA colors, it uses line numbers and GOTOs, and it even recreates the F-KEY prompts of IBM-PC ROM BASIC.
The language is basically C, but a number of functions for the Palm, and a few C++ syntax conventions were added.

 BASIC programming language : BASIC
Most programming languages were too large to fit in the small memory on these machines, and with the slow disk speeds and lack of a suitable editor, a small language like BASIC was tailor made for such use.
The wealth of variants shows that the language is an "organic" language and that it is rather a subculture which deals with computer programming than a fixed set of syntax rules.
SmallBasic is a dialect which runs on many platforms (Win32, DOS, Linux and PalmOS) and comes unter a GNU license.

For the implementation a interpretive language[?] (IL) is used.
Thus the choice of an interpretive approach allowed to economize on memory space and implemenatation effort, though the programs as such were executed somewhat slower.
