SmartMedia is a flash memory card standard owned by Toshiba.
A user could copy the images to his or her computer with a SmartMedia reader (typically a small box that connects via USB or some other serial connection).

The 32 MB SmartMedia card that came with my Olympus Camedia C-2500L digital camera died a little while back.
Even though SmartMedia cards have exposed contact surfaces, I would have thought that the developers engineered it so that it would be robust and reliable.
After seeing the composition of a SmartMedia card, the much smaller size of the SD Card or xD-Picture Card is not so astonishing anymore.

The first program deliberately BREAKS the low level formatting on your SmartMedia Card, which is necessary so that the Second program will enforce that a new one be re-written, but with the Olympus Panoramic header on it (as the 2nd file has been modified to write the Panoramic header).
If your SmartMedia card won't work on your Olympus then you've probably run out of options and the risk of running this program against your card is one you will probably feel you have to take.

With Smartmedia, I found out that reading a Smartmedia card with a card reader often rendered it unreadable by the camera, while still readable by computer.
After wasting two Smartmedias, I found out that I’m not alone with this problem, there are lots of people having similar problem.
Since Smartmedia is an obsolete format, we can expect the camera itself is an older model which could use simplified algorithm to access the filesystem.

 256 MB SmartMedia next year: Digital Photography Review
A rumour bouncing around a couple of Japanese digital camera sites is that the SSFDC Forum (those companies involved in development and production of SmartMedia and SmartMedia products) will be sitting down in October to lay out a standard for 256 MB SmartMedia.
The aim is that 256 MB SmartMedia should be priced between 10,000 and 20,000 YEN (US$80 - US$160) per piece.
My question is (a) is it soon enough (b) can SmartMedia perform well enough for the 4, 5 and 6 megapixel digital cameras coming up and (c) will those SmartMedia cameras which are 128 MB compatible support the new 256 MB cards?
