Smartism - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Smartism is a denomination of the religion of Hinduism and is closely affiliated with the Advaita tradition.
In Smartism, devotees pray to whatever form of God a devotee prefers, (or as monists prefer to call, Ishta Devata, i.e., the preferred form of God) and ask for God's grace in order to achieve Moksha, end of the cycle of rebirth.
This view of Smartism, the Ishta-Deva concept, has colored the perception of what Hinduism is to the outsider, when in fact the other denominations, do not strictly espouse the belief and more closely adhere to a more conventional Western perception of what a monotheistic faith is.

Contemporary Hinduism, specifically, Smartism, is most widely accepted to consist of a Holy Trinity.
Hinduism has often been confused to be polytheistic as many of Hinduism's adherents, i.e., Smartas, followers of Smartism, one denonmination of Hinduism, who follow Advaita philsophy, are monists, and view multiple manifestations of the one God or source of being.
Smartism is the only branch of Hinduism that adopts these ideas strictly.

A number of reform movements have also given rise to sects like Swami Dayananda Saraswati's Arya Samaj which is very strongly monotheistic and condemns idol-worship and focusu on the Vedas and the Vedic fire-sacrifices (yagna).
