Smartphones come in many sizes and shapes, and smartphones have been introduced in the last year or so by virtually all the cell phone makers, including Handspring, Nokia, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, etc. In fact, the Pocket PC Phone Edition introduced last year and sold in the U.S. by T-Mobile and AT&T certainly qualifies as one.
Although the Windows Mobile Smartphone uses the same basic operating system as the Pocket PC, applications have to be redesigned to accommodate the different screen size and the fact that the Smartphone does not use a touch screen interface.

Increased functionality in mainstream feature phones are convincing customers to buy them instead of smartphones in Western Europe, analysts from IDC said during a conference call on Thursday.
Smartphone sales in Western Europe were up 10 percent during the quarter compared to the same period last year, more than the 7 percent growth in regular mobile phones, said Andy Brown, an IDC analyst.
Users are finding that the enhanced functions on feature phones meet their needs more than the potentially more expensive and often larger smartphones, he said.

 Motorola to axe Palm smartphone | The Register
The news isn't that surprising, with John Thode, Motorola's VP and General Manager of smartphone products telling reporters at the recent GSM World Congress at Cannes, that Motorola viewed the Palm device as a research project.
