Smash Hits falls victim to fans' eclectic tastes and internet | | Guardian Unlimited Business
Smash Hits, the magazine that postered teenage bedrooms across Britain for nearly 30 years, is to close after its mix of pop lyrics and heart-throb interviews lost its appeal with young readers.
Smash Hits has seen its circulation decline from a height of 1m in 1989, when Kylie and Jason graced the cover, to 120,000 as it lost out in the competition for "bedroom time" to the internet and mobile phones.
He added that the closure of Smash Hits due to its teen audience moving onto digital platforms was not a gloomy portent for the magazine industry.

Farewell to Smash Hits | | Guardian Unlimited Arts
Smash Hits, with its impertinent tone and peculiar sense of humour (as one former writer pointed out, the magazine's standard line of questioning was never, "What's your favourite colour?" but "What colour is a Thursday?") seemed to understand that perfectly.
But Smash Hits was about to change: out went the marginal stuff and in came blanket coverage of teen pop, then undergoing a massive revival in fortunes, thanks to Adam and the Ants and the Human League.
The latter was responsible for a genuinely telling Smash Hits moment that revealed both something about the brilliance of the magazine and the cultural richness not of 80s teen pop, but of 80s teen pop stars.

The follow-up album, Astro Lounge, was released in 1999, generating the hit "All Star"; a collection of early material, East Bay Sessions, also appeared that same year.
Though no other hits with equal weight were forthcoming from Astro Lounge, the band's work of the early 2000s (2001's Smash Mouth and 2003's Get the Picture?) pleased fans of sparkling pop music.
The group also contributed numerous tracks to a plethora of motion pictures, most notably their cover of the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" (from their eponymous release) to the soundtrack of 2001's hit movie Shrek, and many of these then appeared on the August 2005 Smash Mouth hits collection All Star Smash Hits.

Smash Hits (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smash Hits was the first compilation album released by The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1968 in the UK and 1969 in the United States.
Containing their first 4 UK singles (and their respective B-sides) in addition to 4 standout tracks from Are You Experienced, Smash Hits became exactly that - a #5 album in the UK and one that had a long chart life.
Jimi's then-record label, Reprise Records, felt that a greatest hits collection was far too premature and waited until mid-1969 (and, coincidentally, the break-up of the band once Noel Redding suddenly quit) to issue a different version of the same album.

All Star Smash Hits proves that the group was indeed good enough, arguably better than Sugar Ray, their closest rival among SoCal ska-punk/metal bands to shamelessly grab the brass ring.
Sugar Ray rocked harder and were more diverse, but Smash Mouth found their groove -- a summery update on pre-Beatles frat rock as learned via Animal House, early-'80s T&A movies, and new wave -- early on and then stayed in it, aided by Greg Camp's lean, tuneful, hooky songwriting and good taste in covers.

Smash Hits, while musically superb, disappoints me in a couple of ways.

Smash Mouth - All Star Smash Hits : Music from Overstock.com
San Jose, California`s Smash Mouth first hit the mainstream with 1997`s "Walkin` on the Sun," a groove-heavy, `60s-inspired tune (replete with singer Steve Harwell`s faux-British accent) that made the quartet instant rock-radio fixtures.
Those who thought the pop-punk band couldn`t top that initial hit were proven wrong by 1999`s catchy and utterly inescapable "All Star," which became perpetually in demand at sporting events.
There`s a notable number of covers on ALL STAR SMASH HITS, including a ska-tinged take on War`s "Why Can`t We Be Friends," a driving rendition of Let`s Active`s "Every Word Means No," and a faithful version of the Neil Diamond-penned Monkees classic "I`m a Believer" from the animated blockbuster SHREK.
