Athletics: Kipketer and Barmasai smash more records
SO much has happened on the Grand Prix circuit already this summer that it would be easy to become blasé about world records, particularly as two more, in the men's 800 metres and 3,000m steeplechase fell here yesterday, bringing to seven the total of world records set in the last 12 days.
Kipketer's time yesterday of 1min 41.11sec was his fifth 800m world record in six months - he twice broke the indoor record in Paris in March, then in Stockholm last month equalled Sebastian Coe's long-standing time of 1-41.73, before running 1-41.24 in Zurich last Wednesday week to claim sole possession.
As Kiptanui strode over the final barrier, apparently closing in on the record, Barmasai, second in Zurich, produced a tremendous charge to stop the clock at 7-55.72 and become only the third man to break eight minutes.
