Smederevo was the residence of Branković and the capital of Serbia from 1430 until 1459, when it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire.
Smederevo is an industrial city, and the center of the steel industry of Serbia.

The main tower is well preserved and an inscription on it mentions Despot Djuradj and the date of its construction.
Smederevo fortress suffered severe damage to its towers and walls during World War II, when a big ammunition depot exploded within its walls in 1941, and from bombing in 1944.

On the other hand, first and foremost the natural geographic conditions decisively contributed to the prevalence of rural settlements in the Smederevo Sanjak in the second half of the 15th and first half of the 16th century.
The territorial expansion of the Ottoman Empire carried out in the second half of the 15th and first half of the 16th century, whereby from a frontier region the Smederevo Sanjak became an inland part of the Empire, was reflected in changing living conditions and status of the population.

Smederevo, March 8, 2002 - The Serbian government, Smederevo-based metals producer Sartid and US Steel Kosice (USSK) company will sign a letter of intent on strategic partnership in Smederevo today.
The letter of intent will enable the Smederevo metals producer to have the major central European steel producer, a subsidiary of US Steel, as its partner in the process of restructuring.
A contract will also be signed today in Smederevo on cooperation between USSK and the Tin Plate Factory in Sabac, whose majority owner is Sartid.
