 Lee Hazlewood
SLR wanted to bring these gems to the compact disk legitimately, and affordably, for the first time, in order to raise the profile of this singular American artist.
The series commenced with the 1970 release Cowboy In Sweden, the first of a series of albums recorded in Sweden, and Farmisht, Flatulence, Origami, ARF!!!, and me, a collection of popular standards recorded in 1997, which was the first new Lee Hazlewood album released domestically in nearly two decades.
Over the next six months, SLR released Trouble is a Lonesome Town, his spare and simple solo debut, Requiem for an Almost Lady, an aural anatomy of a bittersweet breakup, and 13, a barnstorming, brass-laden funk record.

Recorded in his prime, “Cowboy” is a singular Hazlewoodian synthesis of rambling cowboy wisdom, moody, rockabilly-inflected rhythms, dark, poetic lyrics, hard luck tales, esoteric images, pragmatic politics and wry love odes.
Moments like the single-string Verlaine-on-'ludes riffage of "Love Is On Fire On High," the infectious gang vocal coda of "For Me For," the vacuum-sealed unison stutters of "New One," and the Beefheartian bramble of "Beefy" all point to the same conclusion: Radio Giddy-Up is by a band at the top of their sound.
Having collaborated with artists like Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Christina Rosenvinge and Dave Motamed (Cell) on previous releases, The Wear And Tear Of Fear is almost entirely a solo affair, closer in spirit to his original, mid-'90s recordings for Smells Like Records.

"Recorded in Tempe in 1997, this is the first Lee Hazlewood solo album released domestically in over two decades.
Like Faulkner's mythical Yowkapa-tonka, Lee's Trouble (loosely based on his birthplace) brims with baroquely American people, places and stories: the debonair undertakers, embalming fluid-quaffing Indians, ugly ducklings, unattainable ice-queens, and assorted jokers, cowards, heroes are all extravagantly named, with histories and exploits that unfold in 10 short, spare musical portraits.
"Smells Like Records continues its Lee Hazlewood reissue series with perhaps the strangest of Lee Hazlewood's recordings -- his album of duets with actress Ann-Margaret (star of Tommy, Carnal Knowledge, Speedway, and The Flinstones).

The town is a cultural void, yet inexplicably the kind of place that historically produces angst-ridden legends like Lou Reed, who grew up only a couple of towns over twenty years prior.
Soon after, the band signed with Geffen Records and released their second album Tales of Great Neck Glory, a satirical ride down the "mean" streets of Hartman's adolescent stomping grounds (Christgau gave it an "A", NME called it "brilliant").
At the same time, he wrote a screenplay by the same name, which is currently in pre-production with producer Chris Roberts, who recently produced the controversial The Believer (winner of Sundance in 2001) to be directed by Hartman.

Music: Lee Hazelwood (Weekly Alibi . 10-25-99)
Smells Like Records chief and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley has done just that with his label's reissues of pop luminary Lee Hazelwood's solo work.
And he did so relying on a dusky, baritone style generally reserved for country artists of the day, but with little physical or otherwise innate connection to the worrisome music of his brethren.
Like Hazelwood's penchant for on-air schizophrenia as a DJ (he was known for embodying several distinct radio personalities -- sometimes all at once -- during the course of his broadcast time slot), his music lends itself to a narrator-as-actor aesthetic that can be a mind-bending day at the amusement park for those listeners so inclined.

 Splendid: Departments: The Essential Albums
As strong as that album was (and continues to be), it was only after I had the opportunity to see the band play live that I realized how powerfully unique their sound really was.
At fleeting moments within the mix, Healy's voice is accompanied by multi-tracked harmonies, the melody carried by angels into a falsetto range that drips with sadness and perfectly expresses the sense of loss that permeates the ballad.
I'll argue to the very end that it is not just one of the most perfectly realized albums of the 1990s, but a treasure to be coveted by listeners, no matter when they are fortunate enough to stumble upon it.

North Carolina's Chris Lee writes such big songs that are full of so much life, it doesn't sound for a minute like it was released by a small indie label like Steve Shelley's Smells Like Records.
Like Marshall, Lee's two main principal components, his voice and guitar, are captured beautifully in "In Yellow Moonlight", overlapping two layers of both, that maintain the same intensity that Jeff Buckley's Grace was drenched in.
Yet, the most stunning work on this record would have to be the instrumental "Mount Venus".

 Tucson Weekly: Soundbites (February 17 - February 23, 2000)
Comprising their debut single, "Lost Bird," was the scraping of an unrosined violin, percussion from Shelley and autobiographical lyrics from Folijahn; subsequent albums have remained experimental (incorporating pedal steel, blues harp, free jazz and delta blues elements) while honing the band's sound into something more cohesive than its early forays.
Nineteen-ninety-eight saw the release of two 2DG-related projects: a solo album by Foljahn (recorded under the name La Lengua Asesina) and Train Songs, a Two Dollar Guitar album consisting of improvisational instrumentals, a move which could be interpreted as an attempt to refine the band's two essential elements of song and sound by isolating them.

Just because these three titles by Lee Hazlewood are unremarkable overall doesn't mean that the future ones won't be worthy of note.
The problem with these, the first in a series of Smells Like Records' reissues of Hazlewood's work, is that the songs aren't as strong as those in the pop years.
He had split from partner Duane "Rebel Rouser" Eddy, and in 1963, recorded this 10-song album that tracks the characters of the town of Trouble via spoken intros and song sketches.
