Male Smew (Mergellus albellus).--The trachea of the male Smew is about nine inches long (Yarrell, 1843: 281; MacGillivray, 1852: 235) or from 3« to 5 inches longer than that of the male Hooded Merganser.
The tympanum of the male Smew possesses, according to Latham (1798: 124), one round fenestra covered by a drum-like membrane and, on the op- posite side, a smooth, oval, hollow bone which is united with the membrane.
Female Smew.--No information was obtainable regarding the length of the female Smew's trachea, but a life-size drawing of a portion of the trachea (Yar- rell, 1843: 281) shows it to be uniform in width, with a diameter of 1'- of an inch, the same as for the female Hooded Merganser.

Has anyone observed subadult smew in the wild at this time.
So my question is: has anyone observed the young smew without fl face between eye and bill base in the wild.
Not my area of expertise but I thought first year males had fl lores, never heard of ad and imm fem being split in the field but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

 January 2001 Bird Report for the St. Louis Area
It was a banner winter for Harris's Sparrows and Snow Buntings, with 4 of the latter on the Collinsville Circle Count alone.
The presence of the Smew certainly livened up the January and early February birding for people across the country, as we had many visitors from other states.
The Smew was in normal wild plumage and appeared to be unbanded.

The fl colors on the head had a obvious green tinge, which is not very well reproduced by the scan.
Apparently a decade earlier a smew (Mer alb) had been flying around the same area in summer time.
No nest was found at the time, but this hybrid was seen in 1994 and 1995.

Got a message on the pager last night reporting a redhead Smew at Cheddar Reservoir yesterday (Tues) at midday.
Good views of the redhead Smew at 2.30pm yesterday (Wed), loosely associating with Goldeneye straight out in the middle of the reservoir from the water tower (thanks for the call Julian).
Redhead Smew still on the reservoir early afternoon until 14:20[Friday} at least.Also at least 6 Goosander,4 of which were drakes.Plus couple of Goldeneye and commoner ducks.Chiffchaff calling.
