Smilacaceae are a family of monocotyledons typically characterized by climbing habit, reticulate leaf venation, paired tendrils on the petioles, unisexual flowers with six stamens, and superior ovaries found throughout the world.
Deviations from this generalized description of growth form and floral morphology have led to the division of Smilacaceae into at least two different families, two subfamilies, seven different genera, and five sections within the largest genus, Smilax.
Current treatments of Smilacaceae based partly on molecular evidence recognize three genera: Smilax, Heterosmilax, and Rhipogonum positioned near Philesiaceae and Liliaceae.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Liliidae -- Spring 1998
The Smilacaceae was defined by Cronquist (1981) is a family of about 12 genera with more than 325 species.
Recent work by Chase, Conran and Rudall have shown the remaining genera placed in the Smilacaceae by Cronquist are more closely related to the asparagalian families than to those now placed in the Smilacales.
Luzuriaga) and Drymophila are referred to the Luzuriagaceae while Geitonoplesium and Behnia belong to the Geitonoplesiaceae and Behniaceae, respectively.

 NYBG.org: Kenneth M. Cameron Profile
Cameron‘s primary research interest focuses on the systematics and conservation of the orchid family (Orchidaceae).
This group of plants is pivitol to the study of orchid evolution since several lineages have developed a parasitic relationship with fungi and can no longer photosynthesize on their own.
In addition to orchids, Dr. Cameron is currently using DNA sequencing tools to study biogeography, character evolution, and classification of the catbrier family (Smilacaceae) and the malpigh family (Malpighiaceae).
