Smile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Studies have shown smiles to be a normal reaction to certain stimuli and occur regardless of culture, and is also not a reaction one learns, but is born with, as children blind from birth smile.
The "Duchenne smile", after the researcher Guillaume Duchenne, is the most studied, and involves the movement of both the zygomatcus major muscle near the mouth and the orbicularis oculi muscle near the eyes.
The "Pan American smile", on the other hand, is the voluntary smile involving only the zygomatcus major muscle to show politeness; for example, by a flight attendant on the former airline of the same name.

Music Review: Brian Wilson - Smile   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Smile is an album with one hell of a story, and that's probably why it's the most discussed and dissected unreleased album in the history of rock music.
Smiley Smile was raw and unfinished, scrapping nearly all of the recorded material for a bunch of half-produced, drugged-out garbage.
This would not be the Smile of 1967 which had been bootlegged and discussed note by note for so many decades, this was the Smile of 2004, sung by a man who had gone far beyond the energetic 25 year-old who had written some of the most memorable songs of the 60s.

TCS: Tech Central Station - Reason to SMiLE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
SMiLE, both then and now, was rather different from his previous approach and that typically used by others seeking greater scope and grandeur for pop music.
SMiLE, on the other hand, hangs together naturally, even when the transitions are quite abrupt, because of the careful and elaborate interweaving of common musical and lyrical themes.
SMiLE does not emulate the sounds or structures of classical music but instead creates a new form of musical organization that combines the interconnectedness and complexity of classical music with the immediacy and allusiveness of pop music.

Queen (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queen is a British rock band which came to popularity during the mid-1970s, and have amassed an enormous worldwide fanbase that continues to exist to this day.
The band also paved the way for the commerical music video, having promoted their 1975 hit Bohemian Rhapsody with a conceptual promo and shot it on film (instead of video tape), releasing it worldwide--many consider this to be the first true music video.
All band members, especially Mercury, noted frustration and disappointment with the album, and as a result, took a break from the breakneck schedule of one or more albums a year, and focused during the year of 1979 totally on a new album to come out in 1980.

Brian Wilson :: Official Web Site
Smile was composed in 1966 in a rapture of creative invention after Brian had freed the Beach Boys from their hard-driving manager father, Murry Wilson, an act of Oedipal self-assertion which helped propel the emotionally volatile young maestro over the edge.
The Smile that the Festival Hall heard could never have been the Smile of 1966, and to fans the point is that, until now, they have been free to imagine their own version, a record of unparalleled and numinous beauty that would have changed musical history.
Smile was summarily abandoned, its demise hastened when Wilson felt that by recording a piece called Fire he had precipitated a rash of conflagrations in the vicinity of the studio.

Concert Review — SMiLE live at Royal Festival Hall London 2-21-04
A band member threw out a reference to 'Dr. Love' to a slightly strained response, but the overall effect was to relax the crowd (and, presumably, the performers!) with an informal, inviting set.
As per previous live outings, the band followed the final chorus with the ascending vocal part known as ‘Bridge to Indians’; a new addition was to conclude the song with the windswept 'Country and Western theme'.
Wilson and his band took some audacious risks with the live arrangement, and the resulting hybrid paid off in spades: the balance of innovation, restoration, and sheer surprise is the very ethos of Smile.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Music | Legend of rock's 'lost' masterpiece
Smile had been due for release in January 1967 at the height of Wilson's creative genius and a few months ahead of rival band The Beatles' groundbreaking Sergeant Pepper album.
Smile was designed to be a concept album built on Wilson's visions of two themes, the historical expansion of America and the natural environment.
Some of the Smile songs have appeared in different forms on singles, later albums - and on several bootleg recordings in the 37 years since it was completed.

Brian Wilson is touring Smile right now, with, they say, an unplugged keyboard and the same stiff onstage demeanor he showed during the "Brian is back" days.
Smile begins, as had been expected since Wilson first discussed the album in 1966, with "Our Prayer", combined with a short piece called "Gee", which is, in actuality, an overture to "Heroes & Villains".
When the band rips in during the wordless (but for "do-do-do" and "ba-ba-ba") chorus, I strain to hold back cries of glee.

"Smile's" second movement climaxes with "Surf's Up," a baroque hymn to the lost innocence of a generation and, beyond that, of the nation as a whole.
Because "Smile" is not merely a collection of songs but a through-written piece that demands shaping, it helped that Parks is also a classically trained musician (who produced his own album-length masterpiece, the 1968 cult favorite "Song Cycle").

 Brian Wilson: SMiLE (2004): Reviews
Smile is quite simply the greatest triumph in the history of pop music.
Whatever it was supposed to achieve originally, right now SMiLE sounds like a beautifully modulated, funny, sometimes unintentional meditation on a failed United States and counterculture, and the lost paradise, real or imagined, of Southern California, and the collapse and reinvention of the male ego.
The most obvious aspect that takes away from Smile's luster however, is an uncomfortable sense that the album has morphed into a quaint piece of nostalgia rather than the masterwork it was expected to be.

Promowest touched by Muse; band entrances sold-out crowd - The Lantern - Arts
When the band played its biggest American hit - "Time is Running Out" - Bellamy pulled away from the microphone and let the crowd sing the bridge, slowly letting his guitar and the song's driving base line build up the chorus.
The band played an even mix of songs from all three albums, but leaned more toward tracks from "Absolution." These tracks generally received the best reaction from the crowd, which bounced up and down to every chorus.
When the band left the stage after playing "Plug In Baby" from 2001's "Origin of Symmetry," the crowd demanded an encore and was rewarded with "Stockholm Syndrome," from Absolution.

The core of the 10-piece group is a Los Angeles band, the Wondermints, whose members, half Wilson's age, specialize in the kind of densely produced, melodic music he pioneered.
That he has also finally managed to reclaim "Smile," a symbol of the wreckage that was his life, only makes it all the more sweet.

Smile seemed an attempt to expand on the jigsaw session methodology Wilson had applied to "Vibrations." What went wrong has been debated for decades, but Smiley Smile was the album that followed in the summer of '67--a "bunt instead of a home run," as Carl Wilson admitted.
After "SMiLe"'s implosion, Brian and the rest of the Beach Boys had to cobble something together for the label and "Smiley": a combination of less produced re-recorded "SMiLe" tracks, completed tracks, and very drug influenced songs is what we got.
They're all really sort of underwhelming in their recording, in particular compared to the Smile stuff-- "Vegetables" is the worse of the bunch, the cut from the Smiley sessions to the Smile sessions brutal and easily noticed and makes the song difficult to digest.

Get Ready to ROCK! Interview with Tim Staffell, guitarist in pre-Queen rock band Smile with Roger Taylor and Brian May
Well as Queen fans know he was involved in the pre- Queen band Smile, that featured Roger Taylor & Brian May. He is one of the few outside writers to get a writing credit on a Queen album as well with 'Doin' Alright', that appeared on Queen's debut album.
You have to remember that Smile was a semi-pro oufit - We all had other pressures - I'm not sure if any of us really considered Smile as a realistic career option.
Cynically I used to wonder if the guys had put 'Doin Alright' on the first album because they were short of 'native' Queen material, but it is after all, a 50% song with Brian, maybe it fitted the blend of material...I'm not familiar with that album so I can't really make a judgement.
