Brian Wilson :: Official Web Site
Smile was composed in 1966 in a rapture of creative invention after Brian had freed the Beach Boys from their hard-driving manager father, Murry Wilson, an act of Oedipal self-assertion which helped propel the emotionally volatile young maestro over the edge.
The Smile that the Festival Hall heard could never have been the Smile of 1966, and to fans the point is that, until now, they have been free to imagine their own version, a record of unparalleled and numinous beauty that would have changed musical history.
Smile was summarily abandoned, its demise hastened when Wilson felt that by recording a piece called Fire he had precipitated a rash of conflagrations in the vicinity of the studio.

Smile (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crucial to the inception of Smile was Wilson's collaboration with singer, musician, composer and lyricist Van Dyke Parks, whom Wilson invited to write lyrics for the new album in spring 1966; at that time the project was still provisionally titled Dumb Angel.
Smile's cut-up structure was certainly unique for its time in mainstream popular music, and it indicates that Brian was familiar with the techniques of musique concrète and the use of chance operations in making art—an approach which, according to musicologist Ian MacDonald, was also exerting a strong influence on The Beatles at this time.
He was by then beginning to exhibit early signs of depression and paranoia and it is reported that during the recording session for the "Fire" section of the "Elements Suite" on 28 November he became irrationally concerned that the music was responsible for starting several fires in the neighborhood of the studio.

Holy Pop Relic - Why Brian Wilson should leave the unfinished Beach Boy masterpiece Smile alone. By Jeff Turrentine
The story of how Smile came not to be has, over time, taken on the aura of parable: It's the story of the emotionally fragile genius beset by knaves, forced to abandon his magnum opus rather than allow it to be compromised.
Smile, as it exists now in a half-realized state, is really the first interactive rock 'n' roll artwork, graciously allowing the listener to finish the songs, to order them according to personal taste, and to invent an overarching concept that might have unified and made sense of Parks' cavalcade of trippy images.
But perhaps the best case for allowing the album to remain unfinished is this: Smile, had it ever been released, would have been a watershed musical moment not only because it was so new, but because the Beach Boys, of all bands, were putting it out.

There have been speculations on whether Smile was to be a “concept album” or not, Domenic Priore even suggesting the theory of the Smile album as something of a continuous song cycle with “link tracks” between songs, a theory that has since been heavily criticized.

Had it been completed in 1966 as planned, "Smile," the Beach Boys' legendary unreleased album, would have begun with a song called "Prayer": a minute and a half of wordlessly angelic brotherly harmony, pure and rising.
The band's leader, Brian Wilson, called "Smile" his "teenage symphony to God," and despite the mess that his abandoned masterpiece became, there's no mistaking "Prayer." The song is an invocation.
Smile!" -- Dominic Priore's exhaustive sourcebook of clippings and "Smile" arcana -- Wilson began tracking "Prayer" several days after beginning the "Smile" sessions in earnest in October 1966.

Those fan versions, along with the many promises of "Smile's" true completion -- it was a stipulation of the band's contract with Reprise Records in the early '70s, and tracks were unearthed for a possible touch-up in the late '80s -- make it difficult to know what tense to describe the album in.
The past ("Smile" contained several ambitious song-suites co-written with lyricist Van Dyke Parks...) is too etched in stone for an album never finished; the present ("Smile" is rock's first concept album, pre-dating "Sgt. Pepper"...) too inaccurate.

SMiLE - Brian Wilson - Music Reviews
The white whale of '60s record-making, the Beach Boys' aborted SMiLE album gradually gained a legend that not only inflated its rumored importance and complexity, but gave credence to an odd notion -- that completing it, then or ever, was impossible.
For the first time ever, the program for SMiLE was compiled, after Brian Wilson first listened to the original recordings with his musical midwife, Darian Sahanaja of the Wondermints (which has long functioned as Wilson's live backing band), and then worked them into a live show and album recording.
Since Wilson himself was previously the most opposed to SMiLE appearing in any form, it's a considerable shock that this new recording justifies even half of the promise that fans had attached to it.
