Sega's Jet Set Radio Future Xbox Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Smilebit uses a visual technique called Cel Shading, a stunning mix of 2D comic book style with 3D animated space.
With the increased memory space of the Xbox, Smilebit has indulged in expanding their levels into huge worlds, full of multi-layered exploration and changing objects, such as pylons, fake walls, and breakable glass windows.
It's just a matter of Smilebit holding on too hard to their original comic book influence to realize that, until recently, all video games have been stuck in the dark ages of text and there isn't a gamer alive not dying to break free towards a more movie-like verbal reality.

The Armchair Empire - Gameboy Advance (GBA) Reviews: Baseball Advance
Their latest gem and 14th cross platform release is the Smilebit developed Baseball Advance.
Smilebit chose to focus on the look and feel of baseball with Baseball Advance, and they have succeeded.
Not surprisingly Smilebit, the most innovative of the Sega fold, has effectively taken a time intensive, potentially mind numbing sport and made it fast fun and pretty to boot.

Preview - Jet Set Radio Future // Xbox /// Eurogamer
Whether we hold cel-shading against the little blighter or not, it can't be denied that Smilebit is one of the few companies doing interesting things with the technique.
Smilebit have yet to confirm exactly how this will work, but it won't be as blasé as the Dreamcast's 'online options', which amounted to zero gameplay and a few stats.
Smilebit has plans for a multiplayer mode that will utilize the Xbox's full range of features, and I for one expect to be Jet Setting myself across the face of some hapless e-sproglet every night of the week for months after the game's release.

After many years of silence, and even skipping over the beloved Dreamcast, Sega and Smilebit have reincarnated the franchise and given gamers what they have been begging for.
The higher you rank, the more items you open; a factor that will certainly keep gamers glued to the game for hours on end, especially considering that a port of the original Panzer Dragoon title is one feature that can be unlocked.
Smilebit has certainly stuck with the tradition of enormous enemies and bosses in shooting games.

GAF - Review - Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)
As the old saying goes, "third time's a charm," but instead of designing an original work or a sequel to one of their franchises, Smilebit was given the oppurtunity to revive a series that was believed dead: Panzer Dragoon.
Obviously, Smilebit was more than up to the task of creating a game that does this series justice.
Smilebit has ensured that you'll be playing Panzer Dragoon Orta for a long time.

More important than proficiency with the hardware, though, is the creative force behind it: Smilebit are certainly no strangers to utilizing unusual and striking visuals to bring their works to life.
Smilebit’s previous Xbox efforts were not for the feint of heart.
Smilebit also added some on-the-fly (pun intended) strategy to the proceedings, by allowing you to transform your dragon between three different forms, each with appropriate advantages and weakness, to help you adapt to a variety of situations.

The key to understanding why Smilebit chose this control set-up is mastering the various boost techniques in the game.
For some reason Smilebit decided to not allow any transformations for the game’s other character Saburouta, and because of this he often gets neglected in favor of Kelly.
GunValkyrie was originally being developed for the Dreamcast, but after that console died an early death Smilebit decided in mid development to release the game for the Xbox.

 Monsters At Play: Gunvalkyrie Review
Smilebit has put together another great-looking title, providing further evidence of the ease-of-development aspects of the big bad 'Box.
Mastering the techniques presented in one stage is essential for moving on to the next, and Smilebit has done an excellent job of making sure each successive stage puts those techniques to the test.
It is complex for the sake of being complex, but I commend Smilebit for going to such great lengths to craft an esoteric type of action game that appeals to the only most dedicated of game players.

By this token, I would reason to say that screenshots do not do the game justice as the game moving at a super smooth 60 frames per second without a hint of pop-up or glitching is truly a sight to behold.
Smilebit truly knows how to squeeze every last bit of adrenaline out of its players by swinging the camera into some truly amazing spins and loops turning this most recent incarnation into more of a roller-coaster ride than any of its previous brethren.
Smilebit continues to give under-appreciated series the attention they deserve and I hope they continue to do so.

With two outstanding rail shooters and one brilliant RPG bearing the PD name, the series was one of the few highlights on Sega's maligned-by-the-masses console.
Now in the hands of Smilebit, the series is set to make a comeback on Microsoft's Xbox in Panzer Dragoon Orta.
However, this isn't simply about eye-candy; Smilebit's goal is to create a fantastic world that gamers can connect with.

PlanetXbox - A Member of the GameSpy Network
For perhaps one of the few times in video game history, the world is poised to sing the praises of a game that's absolutely packed with bugs.
Fortunately, with Smilebit's reputation at stake among a group of gamers who may have never had the pleasure of experiencing their previous games, one would imagine that this is but a temporary problem, and certainly one that will be cleared up well before the game is released.
Information released since indicates that Smilebit is seriously considering making at least some elements of Gunvalkyrie online-playable, which has the two-fold effect of not only delaying the game (probably until early 2002), but also potentially making it one of the first Xbox games to take advantage of the built-in broadband modem that the system boasts.

Gunvalkyrie continues Smilebits distinguished tradition with an unusual approach to control and navigation that has left some players frustrated and others captivated.
It took yours truly approximately half an hour to fully understand how the game is meant to be played, and another couple of hours to really master the control scheme.
Nonetheless, I applaud Smilebit for their willingness to explore new approaches to the 3D shooter.

A game in which the goal is to race around on roller blades and escape from the police while creating graffiti tags would likely be stylish enough based on its concept alone, but the development team made sure the game's aesthetics were of unsurpassed quality.

Starting over at a boss battle - even with the same meager amount of health you had - is far more enjoyable than having to replay each stage completely just to die swiftly at the end.
It's a port of the PC version of the game, and thus it isn't as smooth as the Saturn incarnation but runs at a much higher resolution.
Just knowing SmileBit cared enough to include it makes me a happy gamer, for they could be completely justified in releasing it on its own as a separate remake title.

Retro/Active: Jet Grind Radio from 1UP.com
While games like Fear Effect's animation-cel styled visual were a precursor to Jet Grind's uber-sleek cel-shading, it was Sega's motley crew of high-flying, acrobatic graffiti-punks (Beat, Gum, Corn, Combo, Cube, Garam and DJ Professor K) that defined it.
The Dreamcast's then-unheard of horsepower that allowed for such graphical largesse, allowing Smilebit to fill Jet Grind Radio's every corner with lavish skyscrapers, grindable architecture (like streetlights and overpasses), pedestrian multitudes and vehicular chaos.
Before Sega restructured its internal development teams for the 400th time, and relegated Smilebit to sports-game detail, the development team designed an enhanced Jet Set as a debut title for Xbox.

In JSRF, however, the player may skate to any point of Smilebit's Tokyo at any time - the game is not really divided up into individual stages, nor is there any clock to battle against.
What one has to realize is this is not so much a sequel to the original game as it is a reimagining of Smilebit's original vision.
