Smiley Smile IS SMiLE - Rock 'N Roll Case Study
Smile might not have been a “concept album”, but when considering the amount of “laughter” that occur in several songs on Smiley Smile, it is tempting to call IT a "concept album".
Smile was more cheery, so we used the more cheery title.” The 'Smiley Smile' title is credited to Barry Turnbull.
It is also worth noting that Smiley Smile was the first LP since 1963 without photos of The Beach Boys on the front cover (except for the french edition),and the Smile cover was also drawn.

You may have heard other forms of the songs in the later Captiol recording, especially "Smiley Smile," "20/20," and the Brother Records "Surf's Up" and "Sunflower." Howver, in almost all cases these rough-cut tracks are better than the cannibalized and polished released tracks.
Though many have lamented that this album's interpretations of the Smile material are but pale facsimiles of that opus' full-blown productions, these criticisms are one-sided and unfair, Smiley Smile being quite remarkable in its own right.
And Smiley Smile is not just anamolous in the Beach Boys' catalog -- nobody else has made a record that sounds anything like it, either.

Cokemachineglow.com - The Beach Boys: Smiley Smile
Yet, Smiley exists as an enigma for the Beach Boys, both as a part of the great Smile myth and in that it stands alone as one of the few Beach Boys records that was never really planned or envisioned as an entity of its own.
Smiley Smile opens with the long-awaited follow-up single to the critically adored and commercially successful "Good Vibrations," promised as the single that would surpass even its sophisticated experimentations.
Smile Smiley gives us Wilson with his last traces of limitless artistic progression---before the urge began to disappear, much like himself, from the group permanently.

 The Beach Boys: Smile
The more familiar version is the one which kicks off the "Smiley Smile" album, which was released as a single in 1967, and was a moderate hit for the band.
A version of this song was included on "Smiley Smile," and consists of a series of verses interrupted by a seemingly unrelated "bridge." Like all the "Smiley Smile" versions of these songs it is nothing like the "Smile" version.
Another song which was "finished" for inclusion on "Smiley Smile," another version was assembled for release on the box set which is from the "Smile" sessions and features more sections and a fuller instrumentation.

Concert Review — SMiLE live at Royal Festival Hall London 2-21-04
Which got me to thinking: part of Wilson's genius in Smile was to question the short-term memory of the pop song, which, in 1966-67, was a post-modern prescience bordering on the clairvoyant.
Yet in the wee hours of Sunday morning, the debates around Smile minutiae seemed the farthest thing from our minds: what was important were the seas of people around us, shaking their collective thangs to an aggregate of '60s pop and current rawk.

Smile seemed an attempt to expand on the jigsaw session methodology Wilson had applied to "Vibrations." What went wrong has been debated for decades, but Smiley Smile was the album that followed in the summer of '67--a "bunt instead of a home run," as Carl Wilson admitted.
Smiley Smile is a rushed album, with practically no instrumentation whatsoever and many under-rehearsed vocals, except for Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villians.
Smiley Smile is a terrific album, and definitely should rank among the most underrated, overlooked masterpieces of the last 200 years.

 THE BROOKLYN RAIL - MUSIC
Smiley Smile was very badly received at the time, however, and is still largely considered to be mostly a failure.
It is of course impossible to say just what Smile would have been like had it been completed in 1967, but several of the Smile pieces that ended up on Smiley Smile are very different from the versions on the Nonesuch release, and represent Wilson at his most introspective.
The wonderfully supple phrasing of Carl Wilson’s vocal line on Smiley Smile’s version of “Wonderful,” for example, is replaced by a much heavier stress on the downbeat (by Brian and his musicians), leading to a comparatively crude bounciness.

SMILEY SMILE was originally thrown together as a quick replacement for the doomed, unreleased SMILE album, a would-be masterpiece that had been scrapped at the last minute and has since achieved legendary status, the rock equivalent of the missing footage of Von Stroheim's GREED.
Smiley Smile though never completed, until its release a few months ago, is still a great album even though at first it's very hard to get into.
Smiley Smile is mostly re-recorded fragments of Smile with a less elaborate production, and while most of the cuts are unbelievably innovative, they are also pretty weird.

One of the greatest mysteries of Smile was at least partially solved with the release of the Endless Harmony Heroes and Villains demo, where a section included the lyrics "eggs and grits and lickety split, I?m in the great shape of the open (upper?) country" before leading into Barnyard.
In Smile 2004 a newly discovered 1966 lyric was used for the first verse, the Bicycle Rider and "ribbon of concrete" chorus lyrics were used, and the "West or East Indies" verse was dropped.
Smile 2004's Elements suite was comprised of IIGS/IWBA/FN, Vegetables, Holiday, Wind Chimes, Intro to H and V, Fire (with Fall Breaks vocals over it), Water Chant (with spoken lyrics), and I Love to Say Dada with new lyrics about Blue Hawaii, waterfalls, and getting a drink.

"Smile" is the most famous record never to be released.
"Smile" was Brian Wilson's brain child, a record so outside the scope of anything, save perhaps the Beatles, had accoplished, that it was crowned the greatest record to even be produced, even before Brain could finish it.

Rolling Stone : Smile : Review
Smiley Smile and Wild Honey get respect now, but in 1967 they peeved hard-core Pet Sounds fans, who were waiting gape-mouthed for Smile, described by those in the know as the American Sgt.
SMiLE began as a concert concept for Wilson's expert alt- rock road band, which by 2002 had exhausted Pet Sounds.
In this the lyrics are of a piece with the jokey songlets of Smiley Smile, where five SmiLE titles first surfaced, and the good-natured rock & roll recidivism of Wild Honey.

While it contained some of the elements that would have appeared on Smile, Smiley Smile was hastily completed and bombed (compared to Beach Boys albums) in record stores and on the charts.
