 Smith College’s feeble response
The college recently announced the trustees' decision on whether they would attempt to right the injustice inflicted when the Board fired two outstanding professors in 1961 because of their homosexuality.
Smith's press release that followed the trustees' decision failed to mention that Dorius and Spofford had been fired - or why - and did not contain the words "gay" or "homosexual." Even casual observers were struck by these disingenuous omissions.
Alumna could refuse to donate to the college's present $425 million fund-raising campaign or could restrict their donations to, for example, the establishment of a chair for the study of gay history, named in honor of Spofford and Dorius.

Smith was frustrated by the confusion of the situation, so alumnae groups were notified not to collect funds for Ginling and by March 1954 most local Ginling committees had disbanded.
