According to those who have had long experience in mine disaster rescue work, there is but small chance that the men will be found alive, although there is a possibility that through some good stroke of luck they may have been sheltered behind some protection when the blast let go.
At 11 o'clock R. Lambie, chief mine inspector of the state, sent a telegram to Governor Howard Gore, in which he intimated that the situation was bad and that it was impossible yet to tell whether when found any of the miners would be alive.
Smith, one of the company physicians, in regard to making arrangements for a temporary morgue in case it would be found that the miners had been killed.

The Smith Mine disaster was the worst coal mining disaster in the State of Montana, and the 43rd worst in the United States, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
The report from the United States Bureau of Mines states that 30 of the men were killed instantly by the explosion, and the remainder died either through injuries sustained in the explosion, or through suffocation from the carbon monoxide and methane gas in the mine.
There is a highway plaque near the mouth of the mine, which was never reopened, and there are memorials in the cemeteries in Bearcreek and nearby Red Lodge, the county seat for Carbon County.

This mine is located at Carlisle, Fayette County, on the White Oak Branch of the C. Railroad and operated by the White Oak Fuel Company.
It is a shaft mine 440 feet in depth, operating the Sewell seam which has a thickness of four feet, developed on the double entry system, ventilated by an eighteen foot fan which produces 100,000 cubic feet of air per minute and which is divided between the workings of the Carlisle and Oakwood Shafts.
This mine was known to liberate a slight quantity of explosive gas, but not considered dangerous and open lights were used exclusively by miners and laborers.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Tests on air packs recovered from the Sago Mine show that none of the devices had been used to their full capacity before the trapped miners discarded them, a federal mine- safety official said Thursday.
At least two miners who were part of a second crew in the mine and escaped the blast told investigators that they, too, struggled with their air packs.
Mine owner International Coal Group has said it thinks lightning hitting a tree more than a mile away from the mine's opening was able to travel into the mine and spark the blast in a section of the mine that had been abandoned and sealed in December.
