The legislation also established a National Museum of African American History and Culture Council to advise the Smithsonian Regents on museum issues including, recommendations on the planning, design and construction of the museum; the administration of the museum; and acquisition of objects for the museum’s collections.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established on Dec. 19, 2003, when President Bush signed into law legislation establishing the museum as part of the Smithsonian Institution.
The new museum will be the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, art, history and culture.

In January, 1971, Western Union officials proposed a transfer of the Western Union Museum to the National Museum of History and Technology (now the National Museum of American History) under an indefinite loan agreement in the hopes of making the materials more readily available for exhibition purposes and for use by historians.

Garry Kasparov’s on board nightmare, the Deep Blue that beat him in a game of chess will now be shifted to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

George Mason University’s Center for History and New Media and the University of New Orleans, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, organized this project.
Submissions will be permanently archived in the September 11 Digital Archive in conjunction with the National Museum of American History's exhibition, "September 11: Bearing Witness to History" which is now on a national tour.

 Star Spangled Banner
In 1964, when the Museum of American History opened, the flag was moved to a prominent place inside the museum's Mall entrance, an awe-inspiring testament to our nation's independence.
The flag had become a popular attraction; in 1912, the owner, Eben Appleton, of New York, believing that the flag should be kept in the National Museum, donated it to the Smithsonian on the condition that it would remain there forever.
When Commodore George H. Preble, U.S. Navy, was preparing a history of the American flag, he borrowed the Star-Spangled Banner from a descendant of Colonel Armistead, and, in 1873, photographed it for the first time.

Smithsonian American Art Museum (formerly known as the National Museum of American Art.) Its Renwick Gallery is now called the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
